Erica Stoll, Rory McIlroy’s spouse, was struck by a beer cup while on the 17th green during the Ryder Cup amid a weekend filled with hostility directed at Team Europe and their loved ones.

“Golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week,” McIlroy commented regarding the behavior from American spectators.

Veteran golf commentator Amanda Balionis – who worked with the PGA from 2011-2017 before joining CBS from 2017 to the present – like many, saw what should have been celebratory proceedings. After, she endorsed a detailed Instagram post from the Glamour Mag account demanding reform in golf’s atmosphere.

“If you need more evidence that culture is becoming more misogynistic in 2025, just look at Rory McIlroy’s wife’s Ryder Cup experience,” the post read.

“Over the weekend, Erica Stoll was subjected to the following: had a beer thrown at her head, was taunted with barbs about her brief 2024 split from her husband, and had to listen to fans chant the name of a woman who, some fans online claim without proof, had a relationship with McIlroy at some point around their breakup.

“At the link in bio, read why the hateful [in real life] harassment shows a cultural shift, one where men feel emboldened to attack women in public, without shame or consequence.”

Thankfully, McIlroy revealed during his post-match media session following Team Europe’s nail-biting 15-13 victory over Team USA that Stoll is all ok. “[Family should be off-limits, but it wasn’t this week,” he stated.

“Erica is fine. She’s a strong woman. She handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has. I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating [this win].”

Irish golfer Shane Lowry’s six-foot birdie putt on the 18th during Sunday’s singles ensured at least a retention of the Ryder Cup title for the Europeans.

He partnered with McIlroy in Saturday’s doubles and confirmed that Stoll was being harshly treated by the American fans.

“I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy, and the amount of abuse that she received was astonishing,” he remarked. “And the way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable, and kudos to her for that.”

Amanda Balionis Breaks Silence as CBS Wraps Up PGA Tour Season With a Big Reveal

Banking on the PGA Tour has paid off! CBS has been a primary broadcast partner of the American golf league since 1970. They have presented Jack Nicklaus‘s 18th major win, Tiger Woods‘s rise and fall, the emergence of Scottie Scheffler, and the end of Rory McIlroy‘s 11-year suffering. Throughout this time, the viewership has experienced highs and lows, depending on the enthralling nature of the action. However, things shockingly went downhill as the ratings mysteriously plummeted last year. But the latest report from CBS reveals that things are better than ever.

Amanda Balionis shared a story on Instagram of a post from GOLF.com, which mentioned how the average viewership is up by 17%. In fact, it also reveals that this is the best viewership CBS has received since 2018, confirming that the ratings are better than ever. To end, the post read, “It was also the most-streamed golf season in Paramount+’s history.” Celebrating the outstanding feat, Balionis captioned the post, “You love to see it 👏.”

Amanda, who only joined CBS in 2017 as a part-time golf reporter, had seen the highs of golf broadcasting on CBS back in 2018. She also bore witness to the huge influx of fans during the 2019 Masters Tournament when Tiger Woods captured his 15th major and 5th Green Jacket. Today, Balionis is one of the most respected reporters in the sport. She was also one of the lead analysts at Augusta National. In fact, the 39-year-old had expressed how grateful she was to get the opportunity to work with Jim Nantz & Co. at CBS and present such a prestigious event to the fans.

Such personalities within the team have helped the network gain great viewership in 2025. Interestingly, CBS Sports had shared a few other figures to reflect how well the network had performed statistically. Let’s take a deeper dive into that.

Do the numbers justify Amanda Balionis’s celebration?

Considering the dip the TV ratings took in 2024, 17% might not seem like a huge increase. However, the actual numbers do tell a different story altogether. As per details provided by CBS Sports, they averaged 2.969 million in every tournament preceding the FedEx Cup playoffs in 2025. A year back, the network averaged around 2.5 million viewers only. This came as a huge surprise, considering that viewership was constantly growing every year before that.

In 2022, CBS Sports saw 2.545 million viewers throughout the main season before heading into the last three events. A year later, the number increased by 5% to 2.666 million viewers. The reason behind the TV ratings taking a dip in 2024 is still unexplained. However, it’s still good to see that the network and the PGA Tour have recovered from it in 2025 itself. That means Brian Rolapp will not need to pull off any dreadful stunt to retain viewership by the end of the year, unlike Jay Monahan in 2024.

Amanda Balionis and Rory McIlroy’s immense impact on CBS Sports has been laid bare after the network reported its most-watched golf season in the last seven years.

Over the course of the PGA Tour season, CBS has been front and center for some of the biggest moments that the sport has to offer. McIlroy’s historic win at The Masters — coupled with Balionis’ raw and authentic coverage — have delivered record-breaking viewership numbers and generated immense excitement around the company.

According to a press release, CBS’ golf coverage averaged 2.969 million viewers in 2025 — marking a whopping 17% increase from last year and the best since 2018. 14 of the 19 Final Rounds broadcast on the network, meanwhile, experienced a year-over-year viewership increase.

Most recently, the Wyndham Championship — during which long-time CBS commentator Ian Baker-Finch called Cameron Young’s winning putt on hole No. 18 — enjoyed its most-watched Final Round in five years with an average of 1.951 million viewers.

As Balionis noted, however, the success that CBS has enjoyed this year if it weren’t for Baker-Finch, who laid down the foundation over 19 years with the network before announcing his retirement from broadcasting.

Taking to Instagram, Balionis bid an emotional goodbye to Baker-Finch while filming from the CBS set. It’s been an incredible year,” she began.

“And I’d be remiss if I didn’t say the biggest storyline — at least for us on Golf on CBS — is that today we are saying a final farewell to our friend Ian Baker-Finch.

“He is retiring to spend more time with his family, with his wife, Jenny, with his grandkids. And we’re so happy for him, but of course, we are sad for us.

“Nineteen years with CBS — pretty incredible stuff. Thirty years in broadcasting total, and then of course a major champion, elite golfer, all before that.”

In a separate tribute video, Balionis added: “Ian, we are all going to miss you so much. From the moment that I started with this team, you have led with so much kindness and compassion.

“I am also going to miss the dad jokes. But most of all, I am going to miss every Saturday and Sunday, knowing I can count on seeing you and your smiling face, and bringing so much joy to our entire crew.”

Following a decorated playing stint that included a major championship win in 1991, Baker-Finch pursued a second career as a broadcaster. While the 64-year-old has made appearances on multiple networks over the last 30 years, he eventually found a permanent home with CBS upon joining them as an analyst in 2006.

“Whatever you think of Ian Baker-Finch being in your home the last thirty years, and I know it’s a great feeling having him as a friend from far away,” Baker-Finch’s CBS colleague Jim Nantz said.

“Whatever you thought he was like, it’s ten times better. He’s one of the the great people all of us at CBS will ever know.”

If there was anyone least expected to win this year’s Genesis Scottish Open, it was Chris Gotterup.

He hadn’t recorded a single top-10 finish this year and had missed the cut in nine events. His only major appearance came at the U.S. Open, where he finished tied for 23rd. Yet, under gray Scottish skies and in a field stacked with major champions, the unheralded 25-year-old stunned the golfing world by winning the Genesis Scottish Open by 2 strokes over Rory McIlroy. But all it took was one breakthrough win to flip the script.

Gotterup walked away with a massive $1.575 million paycheck, a direct entry into The Open Championship, and something money can’t buy, and that’s respect. Suddenly, the underdog was being cheered not just by fans, but by some unexpected supporters who couldn’t help but admire his grit and hard work. But who was one of those voices of praise? None other than Amanda Balionis.

JUST IN: Rory McIlroy Makes Honest Admission About Wife Erica Before Open Championship

It doesn’t get better than a Sunday like this. The best in the world battling it out where the game began… and it’s @chrisgotterup who gets it done, but man was it fun watching the young Jersey kid figure out links golf and take down a world-class field, including going toe-to-toe with 🌍 #2 Rory McIlroy. Amanda posted on Instagram, the young golfer from New Jersey wasn’t just up against seasoned pros; he was paired in the final round with Rory McIlroy despite the pressure and unfamiliarity with links-style golf. Gotterup stayed composed, delivering clutch shots on the back nine to secure the biggest win of his career.

He was solid throughout the week, but it was his second round that truly set the tone. “I may be biased as a fellow Northeasterner.”  She admitted she might be a little biased, being a fellow Northeasterner, but said Gotterup’s performance and confidence were on another level.  What made her reaction all the more notable was that Amanda has long been known for her enthusiastic support of Rory, especially during the Masters, where her admiration for his game was unmistakable. But that’s what made her praise for Gotterup so powerful.

“The emotions that poured out afterwards tells you everything you need to know about what this game, and win, means to him.”Just after the win, during his interview with Amanda Balionis, Gotterup couldn’t hold back his emotions. He was speechless at first, then broke down in tears,  a proud moment that showed just how much this victory meant to him. Balionis didn’t rush him or brush it off. She let the moment breathe, allowing the raw, honest emotion to come through. It wasn’t dramatic for the cameras, it was real, and it marked a career-defining win for the big hitter.

As Gotterup soaked in the moment, wiping away tears after the biggest win of his career, on the other side was Rory McIlroy, and he seemed composed, but no doubt feeling the weight of the loss.

Rory McIlroy didn’t leave Scotland with the win, but he wasn’t beating himself up over it. After shooting a final-round 68 and finishing two shots behind Chris Gotterup, McIlroy kept things in perspective. “No frustration, really,” he said. “I’m really happy with where everything is. Looking forward to getting to Portrush” Instead of dwelling on what could’ve been, he was already looking ahead to The Open at Royal Portrush, saying he planned to get out on the course early and shift focus right away. Coming off a rough stretch where he missed the cut in Canada and finished outside the top 40 at the PGA Championship, this week felt like a much-needed step forward. His game showed signs of coming together as the tournament went on.

McIlroy said he felt more confident each day, especially with his iron play and ball control in the wind. A few moments stood out, like his strong 5-iron on the 12th after Gotterup hit it close, or when he scrambled for par from behind a tree on 11. “Everything is in a really good spot… I’m happy with how my game progressed as the week went on.” he said. It wasn’t a win, but it was the kind of performance he needed to build momentum heading into one of the biggest weeks of the year. And that’s exactly what he needed, so there’s no regret or remorse on his end.

For Gotterup, it was the day everything changed. For McIlroy, it was the spark he’d been searching for. Two players, two very different journeys, but both walking away from Scotland with something to carry into the next chapter.

Amanda Balionis mocked Rory McIlroy live on CBS Sports, highlighting his failed haircut following the third round of the Genesis Scottish Open.

McIlroy is tied in first heading into Sunday’s finale, as the Northern Irishman appears to have benefited from some family time after a short break from golf. McIlroy is 11-under-par through three rounds and seems to have rediscovered his form ahead of the Open Championship.

However, McIlroy’s haircut is much shorter than fans are used to, and Balions pressed him on the new style. During a comedic interview at The Renaissance Club, McIlroy admitted that he wrongly assumed that a shorter style would hide his gray hairs.

“You seem a little lighter, and it might be because of the haircut,” Balionis said to McIlroy as he wore a cap during their interview. “Can you just take the hat off for us? What happened there, Rory?”

McIlroy begrudgingly removed his hat to present a very short haircut, and said: “You know, I’m getting a little gray as everyone probably knows. I stupidly thought that by going shorter, it would take the grays out.

“If anything, I think it makes me look more gray. But it’ll grow back, that’s the good thing. It’ll be the perfect length for the Ryder Cup in September.”

While the Ryder Cup is considered the premium event, McIlroy will be desperate to win the Open Championship on July 20. The 153rd edition of the British Open will be held at the Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland for the third time, McIlroy’s home course.

McIlroy admitted to feeling frustrated after winning the Masters earlier this year, which saw him complete the golfing Grand Slam. He has since enjoyed a reset and has shaken the rust off at the Genesis Open.

“I think over these last couple of weeks, coming back over here, seeing people that I know that I haven’t seen since Augusta, having conversations about how people felt watching it, obviously rekindles how I felt playing,” McIlroy said.

“It’s been nice to have these couple of weeks to reflect, as well as rekindle my excitement and enthusiasm for the rest of the year. We have this week in Scotland and a massive week next week in Portrush.

“I’m excited for the rest of year,” McIlroy concluded. Although the World No. 2 has rediscovered his excitement, his form has also returned.

In an interview with Mirror U.S. Sports on Saturday, McIlroy admitted that he’s playing at a similar level to when he won the Masters. “I think… I think I’m just back to… pretty close to being back to the level I was at going into the Masters,” he said.

“I think i’ve had a little bit of a lull, which is understandable. I just feel like I’m getting back to the level I can play at.”
