“What Else Is Left For You?”: Canelo Offered Mega Fight Lifeline Following Terence Crawford Loss

Canelo Alvarez appears to have been offered yet another ‘mega-fight’ just weeks after he was beaten by Terence Crawford.

The Mexican great was handed the third defeat of his professional career by ‘Bud’ Crawford when they clashed in Las Vegas on September 13, surrendering his undisputed super-middleweight world championship in the process.

Canelo had gone into his clash with the American star as the favourite but could not match the tempo that had been set by ‘Bud’ on fight night, leaving him faced with a style that appeared to frustrate him over the course of their historic 12-round clash.

As he prepares to enter what could be the final few years of his decorated career, Canelo has been offered an opportunity to finally lock horns with long-term rival David Benavidez, who currently holds the WBC light-heavyweight title.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Benavidez claimed that he is ‘still hopeful’ that a showdown between himself and Canelo can be made, as he admits he is targeting ‘all the belts’ at light-heavyweight.

“No I haven’t given up complete hope in that fight. I feel like until he retires and he’s out of the sport of boxing, there’s always going to be a possibility of that fight being made.

“And for good reason because at the end of the day, what other fight is there left for Canelo? And now it seems like I got the cards in my hands, he doesn’t have any belt at 168 and I have a belt at 175 and I’m planning to get all the belts at 175.”

Benavidez is set to make the first defence of his WBC world title next month as he prepares to face Britain’s two-time world title challenger Anthony Yarde on Saturday November 22 at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In a recent interview with The Ring Magazine, former world champion Jermell Charlo made no secret of his desire to face Terence Crawford in the near future. Charlo, who has not fought since his decision loss to Canelo in 2023, said that a fight against the undisputed champion would be the ideal challenge:

If I were to be offered a fight with Crawford… I spoke to him once, and it would be an honor to get in the ring with him. Just for what he has done to become undisputed champion, he completed something that I did not complete. To be in the ring against Crawford would be incredible

In addition, Charlo made it clear that from his perspective there is no better opponent currently for Crawford than himself: “I would give him the best fight of the current era. Although Charlo’s last performance left doubts about his current level, his name carries weight in boxing, and the fight with ‘Bud’ could happen if a good purse comes along. “What I am told by Canelo’s (Alvarez) people is that absolutely there is no rematch clause [to fight Terence Crawford] in the contract,” Rafael told Boxing Social.

“He does have two more fights on a contract with Turki (Alalshikh),” Rafael explained.” Now, if Turki said, ‘I wanna do the rematch,’ I guess, they could make the rematch, but there’s nothing, you know, that he can invoke and say, ‘I’m getting an automatic rematch with Terence Crawford.’”

But Canelo taking the defeat tough doesn’t seem to be the case at all, if the recent video of Canelo making his first public appearance since the Crawford loss is any indication.

Canelo’s daughter Emily celebrated her 18th birthday over the weekend, and Canelo made a heartfelt Instagram post that was captioned (in translated English), “Happy 18th my beautiful girl @emilyc.alvarez I will always be here for you, may this new stage bring you everything you expect from life I LOVE YOU ❤️”.

What’s more, videos of Canelo and his wife singing and celebrating during their daughter’s birthday party have surfaced. Fight Hub TV posted a clip of Canelo singing to their YouTube account, which is making many waves on social media.

Canelo is clearly no longer upset about his loss to Crawford video. And this is good for his fans to see, which they’re making clear on the video’s comments.

“Good man, family first,” said another.

A third wrote, “Canelo enjoying the fruits of his labor after so many years of training hard he can celebrate time with his family. A lot of fighters don’t get a chance to celebrate their kids birthdays or their birthdays.”

In an X post of the video, one fan commented, “This is what it’s all about and what all these cats fight for! Not these ungrateful fans!”

“When I was fighting at these lower weights I had to always keep myself from growing,” Crawford said. “When I was at 147 everybody was like ‘man, he’s a gym rat.’ I’m always in the gym anyway but I had to stay in the gym because I had to keep my weight down and stay in reasonable touching range to be able to make weight. So when I was able to work out, not worry about what I do in the weight room or what I do nutrition wise, my body just started doing what it do.

“Like, I didn’t tell my body to just get bigger or nothing…A lot of people don’t know this but I started working out for Canelo in February. This was a process. They think this happened overnight. Chet was like ‘you going to get this Canelo fight, we got to start now, got to start working on your legs, working on your power so you can withstand those big shots and you know he’s going to be punching your arms’ and this and that. So we already preparing for Canelo in February. So when they say ‘ah he just gained all this weight,’ nah, it was a process. It was bulk and then cut.”

Crawford was then asked about fighting infrequently and whether he believes extended time in between fights is a hindrance.

“I think you get your sharpness from sparring and in the gym. If you’re sharp in the gym you’re going to be sharp in the fight. That’s just me. A lot of people don’t believe that…Me being in the game for so long, your body needs rest. So when you having these camps after camps after camps thinking ‘I’m staying active,’ you’re constantly tearing down your body.

“So when they say ‘oh, well Terence, he fights one time a year.’ That’s cool, for me. If I fight twice a year that’d be great, but one time a year — hey, I’m giving my body the proper time it needs to recover because as I got older that’s just as important as anything else, is recovery.”

On October 2, ESPN’s Andreas Hale wrote an article titled, ‘Boxing real or Not’. When it came to Terence Crawford, he answered the statement, “Terence Crawford’s next fight will be at 160 pounds,” by asserting that this was “Real” — so long as he decides to fight again.

Hale went on to note that Crawford would have a chance to win a championship in a sixth division if he moved down to 160 pounds (which he skipped over to face Canelo).

While Hale’s sentiment makes sense, Crawford would probably be sacrificing money to make this career move, as there’s no big name in the 160-pound middleweight division. Plus, the path to him winning an undisputed title at middleweight is murky because there are currently three champions there.

That being said, two of these champions (Janibek Alimkhanuly and Erislandy Lara) are supposed to be fighting in December. So if Crawford were to fight the third champion (Carlos Adames, WBC) and win, he could presumably face the winner of Alimkhanuly vs. Lara for the undisputed middleweight titles in 2026.

That said, Hale isn’t the first to raise this subject, as fans immediately took to X to debate the possibility when the fight was announced on October 2.

Therefore, it’s all up to what Crawford wants to do with the time remaining in his career. Or he could call it quits now and sail off into the sunset as an all-time great.
