‘It’s Not Easy’: Anthony Joshua injury update issued after fatal car crash

Eddie Hearn is unsure on “when” or “even if” Anthony Joshua will return to training after the British star was involved in a tragic car crash last month.

The 36-year-old recently returned to the gym – just weeks after losing two of his close friends in a car crash. ‘AJ’ was involved in a fatal collision in Nigeria which claimed the lives of both Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Reports emerged later that the boxer suffered minor injuries, having cheated death by swapping seats ahead of the journey.

Joshua was spotted training over in Dubai, and was recently paid a visit by Hearn – who shared a post on Instagram. “Great to catch up today,” the Matchroom supremo wrote. The incident came just days after Joshua’s knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.

After meeting up with the boxer for the first time since the crash, Hearn provided an update on his star client and good friend. “It was good to just see him. I have not had the opportunity to see him since the terrible crash,” he told iFL TV. “He is, of course, still mourning. We were in Dubai. We were at his house staying there.

“That’s where he lived with “Latz” (Latif Ayodele) and Sina (Ghami). It’s not easy. He is keeping himself busy. Physically, he is getting himself over the injuries that he suffered. I think soon he will speak in terms of… I do not think there will be anything boxing related.”

Having escaped with slight injuries, Joshua is simply training “for his own mind,” according to Hearn. The Matchroom Boxing chief has been bombarded with questions over the Brit’s future, but he himself is still unsure what the future holds for the 36-year-old. “They are not injuries that will affect him long-term moving forward,” he continued. “But they are injuries that will take time. Boxing is a tough and rough sport. You can’t just go back in camp with injuries like that and I do not know when or even if he will go back into camp.

“At the moment, there is no conversation or no need to have a conversation about that. It’s just… ‘AJ’ will always train. And the training… and I think that’s a lesson to everybody, training can help so much and solve so much. And I think he relies on… do not forget that boxing changed his life forever and he will never leave the gym. And what you are seeing at the moment is not him training for his return.

“He is training for his own mind. And he is training for himself physically to recover and repair. I just cannot believe his strength and resilience.” He added: “It was really good to see him as a friend. And just see him, talk to him, be around him and we are forever there for him as so many people are. Nothing will fill the void of losing those two in his life.”

Hearn’s comments come after Joshua recently shared snaps of him hitting the pads in what he described as “mental strength therapy.” The boxing legend was seen pushing himself with some lower leg exercises as well as riding a stationary bike. Despite uncertainty over his future, Joshua’s uncle sensationally claimed the heavyweight fighter had informed his family he will retire following the crash.

The Brit allegedly made the decision ‘known to his family in private’. “The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing. That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally,” Adedamola Joshua told The Punch. Mirror Fighting understands that the 36-year-old is still yet to make a decision on his fighting future.

Oleksandr Usyk – who famously shared the ring with Joshua on two separate occasions with the Brit – has become close friends with the fighter and has completely contradicted Adedamola’s remarks having shared a conversation with him. During a recent interview with Ready To Fight, he said: “I’ve already spoken with him.

“I heard a desire to continue in his voice — for the friends he lost and for the chance to live that the Lord gave him. Once I spoke with the mother of my fallen comrade, and she told me: ‘Oleksandr, he would be very proud that you are continuing your work; he will watch you from heaven.’ And he, I think, does that. And not just him, but all my loved ones who passed away defending our country. They are my guardian angels who help me in the ring.”

On Tuesday, 46-year-old Adeniyi Kayode – who was the driver on the black Lexus SUV – appeared in Magistrates’ court in Ogun State. Kayode – who was seen wearing a blue hoodie – was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. The case was adjourned until February 25 with Kayode released on bail.

‘He is truly grateful’ – Eddie Hearn shares Anthony Joshua update after ‘inspiring’ catch-up

Anthony Joshua will ‘take his time to get back on track’ as he comes to terms with two unimaginable losses.

That’s according to Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who caught up with the two-time heavyweight champion following a tragic motor accident last month.

Hearn has been spotted working out with ‘AJ’ just days after the British boxing star returned to the gym for the first time since the fatal crash.

Joshua was hospitalised in December after the SUV he was travelling in collided with a stationary truck just outside of Lagos, Nigeria, having been on holiday to celebrate his triumph over Jake Paul only 10 days earlier.

The accident tragically claimed the lives of two of his teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, with the funeral of both men taking place earlier this month.

Joshua paid an emotional tribute to his best friends, saying he never realised ‘how special’ they were, and it’s no surprise that talks of a return to the ring are being kept on hold for now.

Anthony Joshua will ‘take his time’ says Eddie Hearn

“Great to catch up with Anthony Joshua today,” Matchroom kingpin Hearn wrote via social media on Sunday.

“His resilience and strength is inspiring. The loss is heavy and he will take his time to get back on track.

“But said he is truly grateful for all the support and the love shown for Latz and Sina.”

Hearn also shared a video alongside Joshua on a stationary bike, highlighting that time appears to be the only method of healing for his fighter at this point.

He has refrained from commenting on Joshua’s future amid links to a super fight with Tyson Fury in 2026.

“To be honest, at this stage, it is a no comment from us,” Hearn told talkSPORT this week.

“Just out of respect to Anthony. With everything he has been through and the tragic loss of Sina and Latz.

“At the moment, Anthony needs time and privacy. There will be no conversations from us about his career.

“Nothing about any move or what’s next. This is a terrible tragedy and he’s going to need his own time physically and emotionally.

“There is nothing to discuss and prayers for him and the families of all those involved in this terrible incident.”

Fury confirmed his decision to reverse his retirement on January 4.

‘The Gypsy King’ has since shared footage back in the gym, with his manager, Spencer Brown, suggesting he could fight three times this year.

Eddie Hearn Provides Fresh Anthony Joshua Update as AJ Pays Tribute to Lost Friends

Eddie Hearn has provided boxing fans with an update on Anthony Joshua after he was involved in a fatal car crash that saw two of his friends lose their lives.

However, those quotes were later debunked, with a source telling the Daily Mail that the guy has no involvement in Joshua’s career.

Now, though, a man that DOES have a say in Joshua’s career has spoken out, and Hearn has provided a brief update on the situation, how AJ is doing, and what the next steps are.

Hearn said: “I think, to be honest, at this stage, it’s definitely a no comment from us. Just because of the respect to Anthony. Obviously with everything he’s been through with the tragic loss of Sina and Latz.

“At the moment, Anthony needs time. Time and privacy. There will be no conversations from us about a career, any moves, what’s next.

“This is a terrible tragedy and Anthony’s going to need his own time, physically and emotionally.

“And at the moment, there’s nothing to discuss or say. Let’s give him his time and pray for him and, of course, all the families involved in this terrible incident.”

Anthony Joshua’s Tragic Car Crash in Nigeria

anthony joshua

While out in Nigeria visiting family over the festive period, Anthony Joshua and his two friends were involved in a fatal car crash when the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and collided into a stationary lorry. The two friends sadly passed away at the scene, while AJ only suffered minor injuries.

In the days and weeks that have gone since, it’s emerged that the driver of the vehicle didn’t have a licence, and he has been charged on four counts, which could see him spend the rest of his life in prison if found guilty.

For Joshua, he’s since returned to the UK, but it’s clear that his focus and attention isn’t on boxing at the moment. After defeating Jake Paul in December, it was expected that he would fight again early 2026 before sharing the ring once and for all with Tyson Fury, with September being a possible month for the contest to take place.

However, as Hearn has rightfully said in his fresh statement, boxing has to take a backseat for now while AJ recovers physically and mentally from what happened in Nigeria.

Anthony Joshua Pays Tribute to Lost Friends

Following on from Hearn’s update on AJ, the heavyweight boxer himself has taken to Instagram to share a beautiful tribute to his two friends that lost their lives in the car crash.

Joshua wrote: “Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers. I didn’t even realise how special they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men. 100% it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers.”

Anthony Joshua’s preferred next fight option over Tyson Fury named after Jake Paul win

Eddie Hearn has shared that Anthony Joshua would prefer to fight Fabio Wardley next.

Joshua returned to winning ways when he knocked out Jake Paul in the sixth round of their controversial heavyweight contest on December 19.

Having just come back from 15 months on the sidelines, AJ is reported to be fighting once more before a long-awaited showdown with Tyson Fury in 2026.

As speculation grows over who his next opponent will be, it certainly needs to be a credible heavyweight if he is looking to reassert his dominance.

With that in mind, his promoter, Hearn, has stated that Joshua would favour a match-up with the current WBO heavyweight champion Wardley.

He told Boxing Social: “That’s the world heavyweight title. That’s actually AJ’s preference over Tyson Fury.

“AJ would love to win the world heavyweight title again.”

And the Matchroom Boxing kingpin even suggested AJ would be open to taking both.

Hearn added: “If they offer us the Fabio Wardley fight and then the Tyson Fury fight, AJ, I think, would have absolutely no problems taking that ASAP.

“But the size of the Fury fight, that’s what’s interesting to people and His Excellency.

“I don’t think His Excellency is going to come and offer us that fight [Wardley].

“If so, we can fight for the world heavyweight championship, absolutely.

“But I think [Turki Alalshikh] is going to say this is the guy we want for February or March, or whenever it will be, and then you fight Tyson Fury.”

That being said, Fury is also said to be having a separate fight ahead of headlining the speculated Riyadh Season event with Joshua.

Which means that theoretically, either man could take on Wardley in the meantime.

Especially as Fury also surprisingly named Wardley on the hit-list for his pending return.

What has Fabio Wardley said about fighting Anthony Joshua?

When the Ipswich native was asked about meeting Joshua in the ring, he confirmed he was open to making his first title defence against his compatriot.

Wardley told Sky Sports: “It would be a fight I’d take and I’d happily welcome.

IPSWICH, ENGLAND, JUNE 07: Fight Night - Fabio Wardley v Justis Huni + undercard on the 7th June 2025. Portman Road, Ipswich Town Football Club, Ipswich, England.

“Even though I’m obviously at the top now, I still want to face the best guys out there in the division, whether that’s AJ, Usyk, whoever it may be.

“I just want to be in big, competitive fights. I’m happy to take on all comers, in that aspect.

“I want to be in there with some of the best in the world, and he [Joshua] is undoubtedly one of those guys, one of those names.”

On the eve of Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua, promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed the size of the ring that will be used for Friday’s fight – and it has become a major talking point.

There are certain stipulations in place as natural cruiserweight Paul moves up to heavyweight. For the first time in his career, Joshua has a strict contracted weight limit ahead of the eight-round bout.

The 36-year-old, who weighed just over 252lbs for his fight against Daniel Dubois last year, cannot weigh more than 245lbs, although there is no restriction on how much weight he can put on after the official weigh-in.

As well as AJ’s weight, Eddie Hearn was recently asked about the specific rules for this weekend’s clash.

“Same as any professional fight, you know, and we wouldn’t do anything different, which is eight rounds, 10 ounce gloves, eight three minute rounds,” Hearn told Forbes. “The weight is 245 pounds, but that’s just because Jake’s coming up from cruiserweight.”

Joshua’s team had ‘no interest’ in anything other than legitimate professional boxing rules, according to Hearn.

Eddie Hearn confirms ring size for Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua

With two days until fight night, Hearn has confirmed to IFL TV that the ring size for Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua will be 22×22 feet, which is bigger than the standard size for professional bouts, which is 20×20 feet.

Here’s how fans on social media reacted to the news.

One said: “More space for Jake Paul to run away into. AJ with 10oz gloves he better move quick,” while a second commented: “Yeah so Jake Paul can run away around the ring and try avoid Joshua’s right hand.”

A third wrote: “I doubt a 21% bigger ring is going to make that much of a difference. It might let Jake run around a bit more freely but the issue is, for Jake to be in range, he has to also be in range for AJ. He’s screwed either way.”

A fourth said: “Plenty of space for Jake Paul to hide,” and a fifth added: “There will be a lot of running.”

Anthony Joshua has major roadblock cleared for blockbuster fight as ban lifted

Ghana’s National Sports Authority has lifted its nationwide professional boxing ban, in a boost to Anthony Joshua.

The NSA suspended the sport after the deaths of two pugilists in the space of six months.

In March, Nigeria’s Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju collapsed mid-way through his bout with Jon Mbanugu at Bukom Boxing Arena in the Ghanaian capital of Accra before later dying in hospital at the age of 40.

Then, in September, 27-year-old hometown fighter Ernest Akushey passed away after a stoppage loss to Jacob Dickson in the same venue.

The NSA didn’t make the decision lightly and did so in order to come up with a new set of reforms to improve the safety of the national sport.

After much deliberation, the NSA confirmed on Thursday that all boxing activities are now permitted to resume following ‘significant progress in addressing the key issues that led to its suspension.’

The statement also read that: “The Authority looks forward to a vibrant return of professional boxing and also encourages local as well as foreign promoters – investors to bring international bouts and collaborations to Ghana under these enhanced standards.”

What does this mean for Anthony Joshua?

Amidst the ban, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing announced its first show in West Africa on December 20, headlined by a light heavyweight clash between Craig Richards and Dan Azeez.

The British compatriots are set to meet at the Legom Sports Stadium in Accra, Ghana, in an event that Hearn has described as a crucial ‘precursor’ for a potential AJ fight in the same city in February.

Joshua hasn’t set foot in the ring since his crushing knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.

He was initially expected to fight again in the second quarter of 2025, but surgery on a lingering elbow injury delayed his return.

Hearn recently declared that Joshua could launch a comeback at the back end of this year on the undercard of one of Matchroom’s remaining shows.

At the time of writing, there are eight separate events that Matchroom is either promoting or co-promoting before the end of 2025.

The biggest of these is the Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn rematch on November 15 in London, which seems extremely unlikely due to the tight timeframe.

Jesse Rodriguez is also set to square off against Fernando Martinez in a super flyweight unification on the RING IV bill on November 22, while Ben Whittaker tops a homecoming card on November 29.

Other events include Jai Opetaia vs Huseyin Cinkara and Shabaz Masoud vs Peter McGrail on December 6, Diego Pacheco vs Kevin Sadjo on December 13, Giorgio Visoli vs Joe Haworth on December 17, and Richards vs Azeez on December 20.

The final major show of the year is Ring V on December 27, headlined by Naoya Inoue vs Alan Picasso.

However, Matchroom is not listed as a promoter, even though it is advertised on their website.

Eddie Hearn: Anthony Joshua is running out of time to cement his legacy – will he dare to face Deontay Wilder next, or is destiny saving him for a final, explosive showdown with Tyson Fury?

Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that Anthony Joshua is likely to hang up his gloves in 2026, leaving the former world heavyweight champion with just three or four fights left to define his legacy. Hearn hopes those final bouts will finally pit Joshua against his long-time rivals — Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

According to Hearn, Joshua’s countdown has officially begun. With retirement looming, the British star is now in a race against time to secure the defining fights that have so far eluded him. Despite years of buildup, clashes with Wilder and Fury never materialized — bouts that could have decided the undisputed heavyweight crown.

Now, the stakes are different. All three — Joshua, Wilder, and Fury — have suffered recent defeats. Fury stepped away from boxing after his second loss to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, while Joshua is still rebuilding following a devastating knockout by Daniel Dubois last year.

Having undergone successful elbow surgery, Joshua is eyeing a comeback bout before the end of 2025.

“Deontay Wilder fights next week. I know his name’s been mentioned,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“There’s a real possibility AJ could fight Wilder in October, November, or December — and then face Tyson Fury. That would complete his run against every elite heavyweight of this generation.”

Hearn insists Joshua’s next fight will be crucial. “AJ must win, and that performance will tell us everything about his future,” he said.

Despite Fury’s retirement, Hearn remains optimistic about a long-awaited British blockbuster.

“If we don’t make the Fury fight, it would be a big shame,” he admitted.
“There’s no excuse now — the fans deserve it. Seeing them finally face off would be an iconic moment for British boxing and sport as a whole.”

Hearn confirmed Joshua’s comeback is targeted for late 2025, with hopes of setting up a Fury clash in 2026 — possibly the last fight of his storied career.

“2026 could be his final year in boxing,” Hearn said. “That’s only three or four fights away. He’s still motivated, physically strong, and ready for one last run. Hopefully, that run ends with Tyson Fury.”

Turki Alalshikh Suffered Financial Loss Over Canelo vs. Crawford’s $150M+ Fight Purse Deal, Speculates Rival Promoter

Just the other day, boxing insider Rick Glaser bestowed a new moniker on Terence Crawford. ‘I’m going to call him “King,” as King Crawford has a quality sound to it,” he said. Given Crawford’s recent visits to Saudi Arabia and Japan, Glaser reflected on the age-old wisdom – ‘To the victor goes the spoils.’ With the super middleweight’s four belts, his third undisputed championship, and $50 million, the Nebraska native is indeed flying high. After all those years fighting in the sidelines, he deserves it. However, if what Eddie Hearn said stands true, then his achievement might have exacted a price.

One, paid by Turki Alalshikh. Hearn’s appearance at Ariel Helwani’s show has sent alarm bells across the boxing world. According to the Matchroom boss, despite the streaming and gate records and Canelo and Terence Crawford‘s $150 million paycheck, Turki Alalshikh and his team might have suffered a financial hit. Many lauded Zuffa Boxing’s inaugural event at T-Mobile Arena. Still a few, like Eddie Hearn, seemingly prefer to hold it under the lens.

Eddie Hearn: Canelo vs. Crawford missed the mark

Speaking about Zuffa Boxing’s purported plans to hold a ‘Contender Series’ in 2026 that likely resembles the UFC format, Hearn shed some light on the potential layout of schedules. “I think their model will be the league, the content, whatever they want to call it. And then I think they’ll delve into some big shows during the year,” he said. Helwani promptly cited an example – the Canelo-Crawford showdown.

Only, it forced Eddie Hearn to spill the tea on some hard truths. “I don’t think the reality is I don’t know the numbers, but there was probably a loss on that show because of the deal that Turkey did with Canelo and Crawford, and, you know, he really looks after the fighters and, you know, the costs involved in a Saudi Rad season show,” the Matchroom honcho stated.

He speculated if the Zuffa Boxing-Riyadh Season collab would risk staging another show of such magnitude. “Now, every big fight we do runs the risk of making a loss. That’s just boxing. You just hope that the numbers, you know, are good enough and solid enough at the end that it’s a profitable game.

Another followed. Reflecting on Dana White’s claims about staging some of the biggest shows in history, he pointed out – funded by Riyadh Season, Canelo vs. Crawford was Turki Alalshikh’s brainchild.

A rivalry to push the sport to new heights?

The noise of Eddie Hearn’s sharp critiques now reverberates across the boxing world. Falling on either side of the fence, followers have invariably taken sides. But one might as well take a look at Rick Glaser’s nuanced take.

Speaking about Hearn and White’s rivalry, the New York Boxing Hall of Fame (NYBHOF) inductee stated, “Competition drives some to greatness; Bob Arum & Don King had each other to drive each to great heights,” he said before raising a poignant question: “Could Dana White vs. Eddie Hearn become the next Arum vs. King battle royale?”

Ever since Zuffa Boxing stepped into the ring, legacy promoters have been sitting on pins and needles. With the exception of a few, most currently work in tandem with Riyadh Season. So a clash of thoughts and ideas is bound to take place.

Fans should watch out for this space as more such intriguing conversations emerge.

Eddie Hearn Reveals Why Canelo Alvarez Won’t Take Terence Crawford Rematch

There is a lot of intrigue about where both Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will go next in their respective boxing careers after their fight on September 13, which resulted in Crawford winning a unanimous decision and taking Canelo’s undisputed super middleweight belts.

The world appears to be Crawford’s oyster right now. Not only can he choose between numerous opponents, but there are also multiple weight divisions he could fight in. Not to mention that a potential rematch against Canelo would appear to be on the table, which could earn Crawford nine figures.

The future isn’t as bright for Canelo. While he’s still one of boxing’s biggest stars and will make an absurd amount of money in his next bout, there’s strong evidence his best days are behind him. And Canelo’s fan base doesn’t want his career to end with consecutive defeats or, even worse, with Canelo getting knocked out for the first time.

Many assume Canelo’s first choice for his next fight would be to rematch Crawford. However, others don’t think that’s a smart idea, given how the first fight went.

Eddie Hearn Gets Brutally Honest About Canelo’s Career

One of those in the latter group is Matchroom Boxing head honcho Eddie Hearn, who revealed as much in a September 21 interview with Keith Idec of Ring Magazine.

“I don’t think Canelo will want the rematch. I think there’s a rematch clause. I don’t know,” Hearn said. “It’s very unusual for Canelo to go into a fight without a rematch clause. But, for me, I just can’t see Canelo going, ‘Yes, I want to run that back.’

“A certain style is not good for Canelo. When I talked about the Crawford fight with Canelo two years ago, he had no interest in that fight because he knew. Talk about Crawford’s IQ, Canelo’s IQ, Reynoso’s IQ — they know \\boxing. They knew that fight was a nightmare for them, really,” Hearn added.

“But financially, obviously it was a huge opportunity. But when you start saying, ‘My body just can’t do it anymore. It can’t,’ that’s a telltale sign that he knows that physically he’s just not the same. I think what we shouldn’t be saying is, ‘Canelo’s old. Canelo’s shot,’ because you’ve got to give the credit to Crawford.

“But Canelo is nowhere near the fighter he once was,” Hearn added.

Props to Hearn for willing to speak his truth, despite how others might feel about it.\

Eddie Hearn feared he had made huge Anthony Joshua mistake

Eddie Hearn feared he played the wrong hand when it came to signing Anthony Joshua.

Joshua has enjoyed a glittering career at the top of boxing’s heaviest division. The 35-year-old was destined for greatness after he struck gold at the Olympic Games in London back in 2012. Following his triumph on home soil, major promoters were eager to tie the Brit down.

‘AJ’ received several multi-fight deals and life-changing money. It came as no surprise, seeing as he was tipped to become the poster boy of British boxing. Joshua met up with Hearn, but the latter decided to make a real gamble. The promoter urged the boxer to take his time and meet with everyone else before making a final decision.

It was a risky move from Hearn, especially after he did not hear from Joshua for six weeks. It was at that point 46-year-old feared the young boxer had made a slight mistake. In ‘Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen’ – which is now airing on Netflix, Hearn shared his earlier memories of Joshua.

“Anthony Joshua is definitely the most important figure in our boxing business… ever,” said Hearn. “He became Olympic champion in 2012 and every promoter in boxing wanted to represent this man… the race was on to sign Anthony Joshua. Anthony is a deep thinking, he is a gatherer of information and I never heard from him and I thought, what have you done? Then I got a message saying he wanted to come back in. He said, ‘I’ve met everyone and I want to sign with you, that changed out company forever and we’ve shared some moments with AJ.”

Hearn’s father, Barry – who is the founder and president of the Matchroom empire – followed up on his son’s comments and admits he too was itching to sign the Brit. “I was desperate to sign him straight away and Eddie said no,” he admitted. “Give him some time, let him come to us. It was about a year and Joshua had been around every operator in the world.”

The Hearns have since stuck with Joshua after the British boxing sensation penned a deal with the promotion in October 2013. On the topic of the Hearn family, Joshua said: “Matchroom are family run business, Barry, the Godfather, what he’s achieved coming from a council estate like myself, I take my hat off to him. One thing I do want is to buy that house, the Matchroom office from him, that’s one of my goals. Eddie is good at what he does and I’m good at what I do. I’m like the artwork that goes on the wall and Eddie’s there to sell the art, but if I was a bad boxer, Eddie would not make the time for me.”

Joshua has enjoyed some memorable moments under the guidance of Matchroom. After making his professional debut in 2013, ‘AJ’ quickly rose up the ranks across the regional scene, but it was evident early on that he was able to compete with some of the best in the world at heavyweight.

The 35-year-old first became a world champion in 2016, knocking out Charles Martin in the second round. Joshua went on to defend the title multiple times and pick up more hardware along the way with wins over the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Carlos Takam, Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin.

He suffered the first defeat of his career in 2019 after he was stopped by Andy Ruiz Jr in New York. That said, he went on to get his revenge in the immediate rematch, before eventually going head-to-head with Oleksandr Usyk on two separate occasions in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Despite losing both outings, Joshua regained some sort of momentum with wins over Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou. ‘AJ’ has not fought since losing to Daniel Dubois last September. The two-time heavyweight champion is expected to return early next year in what could be his final year as a boxer.
