By late 2018, the fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather was in the rearview mirror. And by now, Khabib Nurmagomedov had successfully defeated McGregor.

Meanwhile, talks had begun swirling around about a potential bout between Mayweather and Nurmagomedov. Despite a colossal sum of money being offered by Dana White, the undefeated UFC champ refused to take the fight. At the time, there appeared to be no personal animosity between the two—just personal choices. Both went their merry ways. But now that dynamic seems to have shifted.

‘The Eagle,’ who officially retired in 2021 after his win over Justin Gaethje in October 2020, appeared in a speaking engagement on Saturday in New York for the Miftaah Institute, where he severely criticized Floyd Mayweather. The topic came when he was asked about legacy. “You know, yesterday I watched an interview with a guy whose nickname is ‘Money.’ They paid him to fly to Jerusalem. And there he was, talking about how he supports that country. He fought for money. I fought for legacy—because if you inspire people, that is legacy. But garbage people like that guy—they’ll never inspire anyone. I apologize for my language,” the Russian translation of his response read. If his dig wasn’t clear enough, Khabib Nurmagomedov spelled it out for the listeners.

“I’m talking about Mayweather. Mayweather,” the Eagle asserted. Talking about how the 48-year-old undefeated boxer prioritizes money over legacy, he stated, “I would never do something like that, because I fought for legacy. And when the truth comes, you must stand by the truth. That’s what legacy is—when you inspire people.” The 36-year-old continued, “We know so many champions. They were amazing in the octagon or in the ring. We know footballers too. But as human beings, they’re nobodies. People see them and don’t even want to talk to them, because inside, they’re empty. But we also know champions who inspire people, who fought for legacy.” The former UFC lightweight champion then brought up Muhammad Ali, prompting cheers from the crowd!

“For example, we know Muhammad Ali. He’s the greatest athlete to walk the earth in the last 100 years,” Nurmagomedov told the crowd gathered. Comparing Ali’s resume with Floyd Mayweather, the Dagestani fighter acknowledged that Mayweather is a great boxer, “But as a person, no one wants to be like [Mayweather], because he’s a nobody in life. Look at Muhammad Ali. He died, but he inspired millions, billions of people—not just Muslims. People love him. And not just because he was a Muslim.”

Praising Muhammad Ali, Khabib added, “It’s because he was a genuinely good person who stood on the side of truth. That’s why we can call him a fighter for legacy.” However, ‘Money’ Mayweather caught more insults from the Dagestani legend. “And that other guy—who is he? When he dies, people will forget him. They won’t even want to hear his name. That’s the difference between fighters who fight for money and those who fight for legacy,” Khabib said during the event.

While Mayweather—who retired from boxing in August 2017—has yet to respond to these statements, the reason their fight never happened has long been revealed, and it’s something to do with money.

In August 2021, during an episode of Hot Boxin’ with Mike Tyson, Nurmagomedov revealed he rejected multiple offers to box Floyd Mayweather for $100 million. He insisted the main reason behind his refusal to fight Mayweather was his principle—he never fights for money. “Money brings you to the situation that you have never been, and you don’t know how to act… In this business, I don’t come to make money. I come here for legacy,” he said.

Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, also claimed that the UFC supported the fight. “Dana White was on board… But Khabib is an MMA fighter. If Floyd wanted to come to fight, get his little a– whooped, no problem.” Mayweather went on to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Logan Paul in an exhibition fight, which also failed to impress the 36-year-old retired UFC fighter. Khabib told Russian media, “There was no competitive aspect to it, old Mayweather came out, they sparred and made money—what else is there to say?”

It appears that even though Khabib Nurmagomedov never liked Floyd Mayweather, this is the first time he has been this severely critical of Mayweather’s actions.

During a recent Kick stream, model and influencer Marlon Lundgren Garcia managed to get next to Floyd Mayweather during a promotional appearance. At first, the boxing icon seemed irked by his presence, presuming a prank or ‘situation’ was coming.

Once security insisted that Garcia was okay, Mayweather heard out his offer of throwing a body shot at the model. However, he quickly declined, letting him know he couldn’t do it ‘for a reason’.

Mayweather also noted that they were there “to sell a product, not box”. However, they did continue streaming and it appears to have done well for whatever product the boxer was selling as the clip went viral.

Mayweather hung up his gloves after knocking out Conor McGregor in 2017, and has never really entertained the idea of a comeback since. He has continued to take part in scoreless exhibition bouts, most famously against Logan Paul and John Gotti III.

However, after learning that Manny Pacquiao was coming back to the fight Mario Barrios for his welterweight world title at the age of 46 this year, reports emerged that Mayweather was considering a comeback.

Pacquiao ended up coming within inches of victory as he drew with Barrios in Las Vegas, and the Mayweather talks appear to have slowed. But given their first meeting was the highest selling boxing match of all time, the bout would be a major priority for promoters to make.

However, during Shields’ July 22 appearance on The Pivot podcast ahead of her July 26 bout against Lani Daniels for the undisputed heavyweight title, Shields made a strong claim about where she and Mayweather are even, which doesn’t pertain to their respective pro records.

At one point in the interview, Shields was speaking about how she doesn’t care if people dislike her, and that she believes any dislike towards her is the byproduct of her unflappable confidence. This prompted The Pivot co-host Channing Crowder to say, “I think [the hate], it’s gender, because nobody can be more confident than Floyd Mayweather. And they don’t criticize him.”

There’s no doubt that Shields is extremely confident, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons she has ascended to such heights in her boxing career. It would be interesting to hear Mayweather’s take on how Shields’ confidence compares to his.

While Jake thought he was playing a funny prank, Mayweather and his team did not find it funny at all, and there was some serious bad blood between them as a result.

In fact, Paul had to run away from Mayweather and at least a dozen members of his team back in 2023 when they confronted him outside of a Miami Heat game. This made it clear to the world that this beef between them was no joke, and hadn’t simmered down despite the hat-stealing incident taking place about two years prior.

However, it now seems that any beef between Jake Paul and Mayweather is in the past, as an X video of them hanging out in France together is surfacing on social media on July 23.

The Most Valuable Promotions’ X account (which Paul is a co-founder and owner of) posted a video of Paul and Mayweather whispering to each other, then seemingly turning around and taking in a view of France’s countryside together. The post was captioned, “Jake Paul and Floyd Mayweather link up in France‼️👀”.

Jake Paul has mentioned wanting to Floyd Mayweather in the past. Perhaps this meeting is the first step towards that actually taking place.

In an interview with Plejmo, Jones sent a scathing message to Mayweather, accusing the five-division world champion of ducking three fighters during his career: Amir Khan, Terence Crawford and a prime Manny Pacquiao.

“If you fight everybody you’re going to fight someone who is going to give you a hard time, you did not fight Amir Khan. Terence Crawford is three years older than Canelo, but you never fought Terence. Terence has been on top for the last 20 years, but you never fought Terence.

“He should have fought Manny Pacquiao when he was at his peak three years before they fought, he waited for Marquez to knock him out. Then you fought him, so you ain’t fighting the prime Manny.

“I should have never fought again after I came back down from heavyweight. We lost 25 pounds and I’m not ducking anybody, but then anything might happen when you fight anybody, any way, any time. But when you don’t do that – I’m not saying that’s not smart for him not to do that – that is probably why they consider him one of the best ever, which is cool, but they don’t know no better.”

Jones recently expressed his interest in a clash with Mayweather, but claimed he is only interested in facing the former pound-for-pound star in an officially sanctioned bout, rather than an exhibition contest.

Despite the unanimous decision victory, calls for a rematch never truly died, mainly from Pacquiao’s side.

The streaming service will broadcast Canelo Álvarez vs Terence Crawford in September, organized by Dana White in conjunction with Riyadh Season.

It’s now up to Pacquiao to secure a bidding war, which could lead to the pair finally fighting again.

As he heads into another pay-per-view main event at the MGM Grand, the same venue that hosted their original encounter, Pacquiao is not only fighting for another world title.

A text message from Team Mayweather to esteemed boxing journalist Lance Pugmire reveals that both parties have already touched base over a money-spinning sequel.

“Conversations are already happening,” read the text. “If Manny wins, this rematch could be worth billions.”

The fierce rivals were in talks to meet in an exhibition bout last year, but it never came to fruition.

Part of the reason they were unable to get past the negotiation table was that Pacquiao only wanted to face Mayweather in a ‘real fight’.

“I don’t know if it will happen by the end of the year, but he will see,” Pacquiao told the Ariel Helwani Show when quizzed on a second fight with Mayweather.

“One at a time. Of course [I would be interested in fighting Mayweather].

“He has been ducking me. I don’t want an exhibition, I want a real fight.

“It’s been a long time that I have wanted to give the fans a good fight between me and him.

“But he has been ducking and avoiding me. Let’s focus on this Saturday, I have business to take care of.”

Mayweather famously defeated Pacquiao via unanimous decision in 2015 to unify the WBC, WBA and WBO welterweight titles.

The much-anticipated showdown shattered multiple all-time records, including pay-per-view buys, pay-per-view revenue and live gate.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao eclipsed 4.6million pay-per-view buys and grossed over $600million to become the richest fight in boxing history.

It seems unlikely a second fight would generate the same commercial success, given the ever-changing market and both men’s advanced age.

But there appears to be interest from both sides.

It remains to be seen whether Mayweather would be willing to risk his perfect 50-0 record in a pro bout, although the first ballot Hall of Famer may be forced to if he wants to run it back with Pacquiao.

At the start of 2024, ‘Pac Man’ staggeringly appeared to announce a sequel would take place in 2025 after the pair met, but it failed to materialise.

But now the Filipino legend will be fighting in a full professional comeback against Mario Barrios this Saturday in Las Vegas for the WBC welterweight title.

Mayweather has previously been against making his own full comeback, given he owns a perfect 50-0 record.

Albeit in a staggering revelation, it appears that talks over a second instalment of their epic rivalry have now been brought back to the table.

In a quote obtained by renowned journalist Lance Pugmire from Mayweather’s camp, they believe it could be worth a record-breaking purse.

It read: “Conversations are already happening. If Manny wins, this rematch could be worth billions.”

Should Pacquiao taste victory in what would be an upset against a 30-year-old champion, it could set up a world title clash with Mayweather.

But it is unclear if the American would prefer to keep the second meeting within the rules of an exhibition or not.

Mayweather has fought in a series of exhibitions since retiring after a victory over Conor McGregor in 2017.

And he has only faced limited opposition including the likes of influencers Logan Paul and Deji Olatunji.

A showdown with Pacquiao would be a far meaner feat, despite the pair being far from the peak of their legendary powers.

But it remains to be seen if Pacquiao can pick up a win, given he looked a shadow of himself in his previous exhibition with kickboxing star Rukiya Anpo last year.

There are also justifiable health concerns regarding his return.

However, Pacquiao seems firmly open to the idea of renewing his rivalry with ‘Money’.

And he has already started a new war of words by criticising his famous foe in the build-up to his comeback.

He said of their previous clash: “Floyd Mayweather is running the whole 12 rounds, and he won the fight. How is that amazing?

“I feel sorry for the fans because the fight was boring. That’s not what the fans are expecting to us, as a fighter.

“As a fan, I want to see an exciting fight. Not a fashion show. Action!

“Rematch, with Floyd? I’m still active. It’s up to him if he’s going to fight.”

He appeared at ease, watching NBA highlights on the luxury car’s in-built entertainment screen.

Mayweather looked relaxed in his new ride, enjoying the highlights while cruising through the streets of Las Vegas. While some fans praised Mayweather for enjoying the rewards of his undefeated 50-0 career, others harshly criticized the 48-year-old for flaunting his wealth. However, if you know Mayweather, you’d know this isn’t something new.

But not everyone thinks it’s a good idea. Claressa Shields, the female boxing star who calls herself the ‘Greatest Woman Of All Time’, shared her thoughts. Shields has won world titles in five weight classes and is undisputed in three. She knows her stuff.

In an interview with K.O Artist Sports, Shields said:

 

“I would love to see it. I don’t think Roy Jones can do anything with Floyd. Floyd can still fight right now so I would have to say Floyd [wins].”

Even with all this talk, the fight probably won’t happen. But the feud? It’s not slowing down anytime soon. These two legends just keep going at it.
