Gervonta Davis isn’t as good as we think he is, reveals a former sparring partner and world champion

I would f**k him up

Despite his inactivity, Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) remains one of the most heralded figures in the boxing world.

Tank last won in 2024, knocking out Frank Martin, though he has since succumbed to a controversial draw against Lamont Roach Jr., while battling legal troubles outside of the ring.

Nevertheless, he is still the man to beat in the lightweight and super lightweight divisions.

As a result of his ongoing legal battles, ‘Tank’ remains inactive and was recently stripped of his WBA lightweight title.

Has his inactivity taken the edge off the once fearsome ruler at 135 lbs? Keyshawn Davis thinks so.

Speaking to Oblivion, fellow former lightweight champion Davis (14-0, 10 KOs) revealed that he would make easy work of his countryman should he ever feel the itch to return to the fight game.

“I think that bro can fight, for real. His power is his best attribute, for sure.”

Davis went on to reveal that the pair had sparred in the past, stating that he never found ‘Tank’ to field much of a challenge in their previous encounters.

“I have sparred him twice, I actually sparred him at the Floyd Mayweather Gym, the second time I sparred him.

“That sh*t was easy too. I don’t like to keep talking sh*t about Tank because I don’t wanna seem like I am d**k-riding him, but I would f**k him up for sure.”

Report: Gervonta Davis’ Mid-2026 Return Talk Heats Up Amid Arrest Warrant Drama

Gervonta Davis may not be done yet.

The Baltimorean has been making headlines, not for boxing, though. Legal troubles led to his arrest by law enforcement in late January on domestic battery allegations, followed by another arrest warrant saga in Baltimore.

Though he secured bail in the Miami case and the Baltimore warrant was reportedly recalled by the judge, the entire fiasco raised questions about the lightweight phenom’s future in boxing. Meanwhile, it’s been 12 months since Davis stepped into the ring. His inactivity since the controversial draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in March 2025 forced the WBA to designate him a “champion in recess.” Only later did it emerge that Tank had been stripped of his belt. However, the latest report indicates the former champion could make a comeback by midyear.

Taking a cue from a Mexican boxing journalist for ESPN, Salvador Rodriguez’s latest tweet, Pound4our4Pound reported that Gervonta Davis vs Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz & Lamont Roach vs William Zepeda are reportedly being discussed for the middle of the year.

For the record, Rodriguez had only shared a collage of pictures—Isaac Cruz and Gervonta Davis alongside Roach Jr. and Zepeda—saying, ” What’s brewing for midyear.” The speculation likely stems from recent reports about the vacant WBA and WBC belts at 135 pounds, along with comments from his trainer.

“He ain’t gone nowhere. ‘Tank’ is still here,” Calvin Ford told The Rize Podcast. “… When he comes back, it’s got to be the right fight because we want to entertain… He will be back in the mix. Y’all got to remember ‘Tank’ been doing this sh-t since he was seven years old. Sometimes you need that reset… Going through things that he’s been going through… he looks happy.”

Early this week, Dan Rafael reported that the WBA is planning to send letters ordering a title fight between number one contender Floyd Schofield Jr. and Lucas Bahdi. Reports that the WBC officially ordered a matchup between its top-ranked contender, William Zepeda and the No. 2-ranked contender, Lamont Roach Jr., soon followed.

Against that backdrop, Roach Jr. had faced Tank Davis on March 1 last year. With the latter taking a voluntary knee in the ninth round – for which he went unpunished – the fight ended in controversial fashion. Later reports indicated that both sides had planned a rematch, but it fell apart as Davis became embroiled in one legal tussle after another.

An opportunity arrived with the money-making exhibition against Jake Paul on November 15. But Davis’ involvement in a civil lawsuit forced the cancellation of the fight.

What Gervonta Davis’ return would mean for the 135-pound title picture

For Gervonta Davis, the fallout was significant. A fighter who became one of boxing’s biggest draws – the proverbial “face of boxing” – saw his status shift from champion to one of the sport’s most controversial figures, coinciding with his comments about leaving boxing.

Taken together, the rumored matchup against Pit Bull Cruz should relieve diehard fans who have been looking forward to his return.

If true, Tank and Pit Bull would be facing each other for the second time. The duo faced off four years ago, and the fight ended in a tough unanimous decision win for the American. Cruz became the second fighter to take the formidable Tank the whole distance.

With Tank Davis getting back in the mix, the division becomes more intriguing. If he defeats Cruz once again and Roach Jr. secures a win over Zepeda, then they stand a chance to meet again for title unification. If Cruz prevails over a ring-rusted Davis and Roach Jr. defeats Zepeda, a rematch between them could loom. The coming months should clarify whether Tank reshapes the division or becomes part of its uncertainty.

Former world champion says he’ll make Gervonta Davis fight look easy: “I’ll whoop him”

Gervonta Davis remains regarded as one of the most fearsome knockout artists in the sport, but there is one former world champion who is extremely confident of handing ‘Tank’ his first professional defeat, after having success in sparring.

Davis last won a fight in June 2024, when he knocked out Frank Martin, controversially drawing with Lamont Roach Jr in his lone bout since, with a host of issues outside of the ring possibly having an impact on his performance inside of it.

Issues with the law continue to intervene with what should be the prime years of the 31-year-old Baltimore brute, who has now been stripped of his WBA lightweight world title, but it remains unknown when, or if, ‘Tank’ will make his return to the sport.

Should he opt to return to the fight game, fellow former lightweight ruler, Keyshawn Davis, told Oblivion that he is confident of being able to ‘f**k Tank up’ after ‘easy’ sparring sessions in the past.

“I think that bro can fight, for real. His power is his best attribute, for sure.

Keyshawn Davis knocked out Jamaine Ortiz in his first fight up at 140lbs since losing his lightweight world title, but it remains to be seen whether ‘The Businessman’ will stick around at super-lightweight or move up to the welterweight scene this year.

Gervonta Davis’ boxing return being planned despite ‘battery & kidnapping’ case

GERVONTA DAVIS’ coach has claimed a plan for him to return to the ring is in place – despite his outstanding legal troubles.

The controversial American was due to throw down with social media sensation Jake Paul in a Miami melee live on Netflix last November.

But allegations of battery, false imprisonment and attempted kidnapping from one of the southpaw’s former girlfriends led to the fight being scrapped.

Davis was arrested in relation to the alleged incident, which is said to have taken place at a strip club in Miami Gardens, late last month following a two-week manhunt.

The 31-year-old is out on bail and will likely soon appear in court over the harrowing allegations.

But his current troubles with the law, according to his coach Calvin Ford, haven’t stopped the foundations for his ring return from being laid.

In an interview with The Rise podcast, he said: “He will be back in the mix.

“Tank has been doing this s**t since he was seven-years-old. Sometimes you need that reset because that reset means a lot.

“I can’t wait. I already know who I would like to see for a comeback.

“The person I want to see him in the ring with is the one we’re going to fight.

“That’s why I can’t say yet. I’m campaigning for it.

“At the end of the day he has to make the decision on who he wants to fight.

“But I know it has to be the right opponent, especially for his fans, so they can really say I support him.

“It has to be a fight where they can be like, ‘Yeah!’”

Davis’ alleged victim claims the incident which led to the scrapping of his fight with Paul was an initial argument which escalated.

It’s alleged that Davis hit her in the back of the head and then slapped her in the face during the confrontation.

Additionally, she claims Davis “forcefully escorted” her out of the premises down a stairway and into a park garage.

Davis is said to have released his grip on the woman after reaching the parking lot, allowing her to seek help from her co-workers.

She reported the alleged incident, which she claims left her with minor injuries, to the police two days later.

Police claim to have video footage that “corroborates key elements of the victim’s statements.”

WBA lightweight title fight set after Gervonta Davis stripped of belt

The WBA is reportedly set to order a world title showdown at 135lbs after stripping Gervonta Davis of his black and gold belt in January.

Davis became the sanctioning body’s ‘champion in recess’, meaning he has not been completely removed from the picture, after being dealt a domestic violence charge at the beginning of 2026.

Naturally, his unsavoury behaviour outside the ring has resulted in a prolonged spell of inactivity, which is also why the WBA no longer considers him an active champion.

The 31-year-old’s last outing saw him make a successful WBA title defence, boxing to a controversial draw against Lamont Roach in March 2025, before inking a deal to face Jake Paul in an exhibition match.

Due to allegations of domestic violence, though, Davis was ultimately removed from the event and replaced by Anthony Joshua, who scored a sixth-round finish over Paul in December.

As for the vacant WBA lightweight title, boxing journalist Dan Rafael reported via social media on Monday that the organisation will order a clash between Floyd Schofield and Lucas Badhi.

“Letters expected to go out this week but [the WBA] told me [on] Sunday it will order Floyd Schofield-Lucas Bahdi [for the] vacant 135[lb] title.”

Schofield has not fought since his blistering first-round finish over Tevin Farmer in June, when the 23-year-old cemented himself as the WBA’s leading lightweight contender.

Placed just behind him in the rankings is Bahdi, another unbeaten operator, who comes off a unanimous decision victory over Roger Gutierrez in August.

As per the WBA’s rules and regulations, both parties will be given a 30-day negotiation window once their world title fight is ordered, with their matchup heading to a purse bid hearing if a deal cannot be reached.

“No Fighter in History”- Terence Crawford Reveals Exactly Why Gervonta Davis Should Fight Shakur Stevenson

It’s a close-knit band. A band of brothers: Terence Crawford, Andre Ward, and Shakur Stevenson.

In many ways, they represent the past, present, and future of boxing. Ward was Stevenson’s manager when he made his professional debut in 2017 and then, guiding Stevenson through the ups and downs of his career, Crawford was like his big brother. No wonder the older boxer is looking out for Stevenson.

Here’s the thing: Shakur Stevenson has long been under fire for his fighting style. Even the ninth-round drubbing of Josh Padley fell short of convincing the skeptics. Standing at the forefront, Gervonta Davis joins those who believe Stevenson’s resume needs a significant boost, but despite the latter’s callout, the Baltimorean has remained noncommittal. However, Crawford may have just made Stevenson’s case stronger.

During an interview with The Ring, Terence Crawford shared his views about the stacked lightweight division. With Shakur Stevenson wearing the WBC belt and the likes of Gervonta Davis, Vasyl Lomachenko, and Keyshawn Davis joining the championship roster, the division is a hotbed of immense talent. However, if asked to choose the best, Stevenson is Crawford’s obvious pick.

“I talked to him [Stevenson] and told him just be yourself you know, just keep winning. It doesn’t matter what the naysayers say and what the people that’s having certain agendas against him have to say.”

He’s a great fighter. These fighters can’t beat him. So they want to make him a normal fighter and fight the fight that they want him to fight because he is unnatural. He has his own style. There’s no fighter in history that I can remember to have a style like Shakur Stevenson,” he insisted.

In the current generation, perhaps no other boxer/fighter knows and understands the sweet science better than Terence Crawford. It’s something Oleksandr Usyk frequently acknowledges. According to the heavyweight champion, Crawford is the best boxer of the era. That’s why his discerning eyes can easily identify special talents like Stevenson.

Gervonta Davis: Is Shakur Stevenson on your radar?

It’s not the first time Crawford heaped praises on Shakur Stevenson. A month ago, he joined Stevenson to watch close associate Keyshawn Davis’ title fight with Denys Berinchyk. During the post-fight interaction with the media, he stated that in the current lineup, he foresaw only Keyshawn Davis and Shakur Stevenson capable of defeating Gervonta Davis.

When asked about a potential title unification at 135 pounds, he said that Gervonta Davis knows “what he is up against when he fights Shakur or Keyshawn.” Throwing a sweeping shot at the Baltimorean who has been frequently criticized for fighting sub-par opponents, Crawford said that those kinds of fighters do not have the mental makeup to last tough exchanges.

Hence, “Them two guys (Shakur and Keyshawn) right there, you know what I mean, is going to be the ones that, you know, give him (Tank) his first ‘L,’” claimed Crawford in February. On the same note, both the boxers are confident they could defeat ‘Tank’.

In fact, Stevenson has been trying to fight Gervonta for years now, but things simply haven’t worked out. “The ball is in his court. I can’t say ‘I’m going to send him an offer’. Turki [Alalshikh] can,” the boxer said in January.

Shakur Stevenson certainly doesn’t need anyone’s validation. Despite his resume lacking big names, Stevenson has consistently showcased his brilliant skills. With extraordinary defensive techniques and a ring IQ capable of troubling even the best sluggers, he poses a serious threat to the current roster. After the Lamont Roach debacle, if Gervonta Davis truly wants to elevate his career before his suggested retirement, fighting Shakur Stevenson could cement his legacy in boxing history.

Calvin Ford, the long-time coach for Gervonta Davis, has commented on the probability of Tank returning to the ring.

The former pound-for-pound boxing star last fought in April, 2026, when he shared a disputed draw with Lamont Roach Jr.

Since then, he was linked with a Roach rematch but instead moved toward an exhibition involving Jake Paul on Netflix. Most Valuable Promotions, though, canceled that event amid allegations ‘Tank’ had committed battery causing injury. Though he denies the allegations, the matter remains unresolved at the time of publication.

The sport of boxing continues without Davis but, per Ford, the fighter’s comeback will be for a big fight.

“He ain’t going anywhere,” Ford told the Rize Podcast. “Tank is still here. And I guarantee you something that will happen. Everybody miss Tank fighting, and when he come back it will be the right fight as we want to entertain.

“Things happen for a reason to make a person much stronger,” Ford added. “One of the guys you truly love is not in the mix right now but he will be back in the mix. Tank been doing this since he’s been 7 years old. Sometimes you need that reset. Him being away, going through things he’s being through. He looks happy. I can’t wait.

“I can’t tell nobody who I’d to see in the comeback — that’s who we’re going to fight. It’s being promoted right under your nose.”

“He’s fighting who I want him to”: Gervonta Davis coach confirms comeback plan

A big update has been given on the fighting future of Gervonta Davis.

Davis hasn’t fought since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr back in March 2025, having been involved in some serious legal issues since then.

He had been scheduled to take on YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in November, but those problems outside of the ring led to that bout being cancelled, and ‘Tank’ has subsequently been stripped of his WBA lightweight title.

Many boxing fans have wondered whether or not Davis may ever compete again, but his coach Calvin Ford has insisted to The Rize Podcast that ‘Tank’ will indeed return, and that he has a good idea who he will face.

“He will be back in the mix.

Tank has been doing this sh*t since he was seven-years-old. Sometimes you need that reset because that reset means a lot.

“I can’t wait. I already know who I would like to see for a comeback. The person I want to see him in the ring with is the one we’re going to fight. That’s why I can’t say yet. I’m campaigning for it.

“At the end of the day he has to make the decision on who he wants to fight, but I know it has to be the right opponent, especially for his fans so they can really say I support him. It has to be a fight where they can be like ‘yeah!’”

Davis remains one of the biggest names in the sport, and if he was to return, he is at the top of the hit list for one reigning world champion.

Gervonta Davis doesn’t exist in Shakur Stevenson’s eyes and Tank’s boxing career might be over

Following the retirement of Terence Crawford, the boxing world was wondering who was going to step up and take his spot as many fans’ top pound-for-pound boxer going into the future. Oleksandr Usyk is still that guy for many, as is Naoya Inoue, but perhaps no one has ascended more over the past couple of months than Shakur Stevenson.

Stevenson’s recent dominant win over Teofimo Lopez saw him debut at junior welterweight by capturing the WBO title. At 25-0 and on the back of an impressive win, Stevenson is up to No. 3 in Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound rankings. Now, people want to know what he’ll do next. Stephen A. Smith wanted to get to the bottom of that question in a recent interview.

Shakur Stevenson refuses to say top boxers are scared of fighting him

Smith asked Stevenson about three different boxers: Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. He wanted to know if any of them were scared of Stevenson, in the champion’s eyes. While Stevenson didn’t claim any of them are scared of him, his answer for Davis particulary stood out.

  • Shakur Stevenson on if Gervonta Davis is scared of him: “Hey man, like I said, I don’t speak on that dude.”
  • Shakur Stevenson on if Ryan Garcia is scared of him: “He’s been saying my name lately, let’s see if he really sticks with it.”
  • Shakur Stevenson on if Devin Haney is scared of him: “We’ll see, we’ll see.”

It sounds like Stevenson wants nothing to do with Davis following his legal issues. It’s smarter for Stevenson to avoid even discussing Tank at this moment in time, given how in limbo his personal and boxing future are.

Garcia and Haney are more open season. Garcia has mentioned Stevenson’s name in recent interviews, but King Ryan has to handle his own business with Mario Barrios, first, before even getting a shot at Stevenson. Haney, meanwhile, appears to be targeting either Richardson Hitchins or Keyshawn Davis for his next bout.

Gervonta Davis ‘top of the list’ for world title fight but would face big jump up in weight

The return of Gervonta Davis is up in the air but there may be a title fight waiting for him in the welterweight division should he return.

Davis has not won a fight since June 2024, with his solitary outing since being a controversial draw against Lamont Roach Jr last March – a fight which many fans believe should have cost Davis his undefeated record.

‘Tank’ was then scheduled to face Jake Paul, but he was mentioned in a civil lawsuit – which cites violent behaviour, battery and kidnapping – two weeks before the fight, resulting in the cancellation of the event.

The 31-year-old has since been arrested and stripped of his WBA lightweight world title, with a potential return to the ring seemingly on hold until his situation outside of it has been cleared up.

Yet, in an interview with All The Smoke Fight, trainer and father of Devin Haney, Bill, revealed that Davis still sits atop the hit list for the WBO welterweight ruler.

“It’s about 10 names on the list. Tank is at the top of it, maybe Shakur [Stevenson] is next. Jaron Ennis. I think Conor Benn might be on there, towards the bottom, you know what I mean?

“Ryan Garcia is number 10, Brian Norman was on there. Keyshawn Davis, your man Keyshawn Davis is on there too.”

‘Tank’ has only fought as high as super-lightweight – a win against Mario Barrios back in 2021 – and would be undersized at welterweight.

The new holder of the WBA lightweight world title is expected to be determined on Saturday, April 11, although Golden Boy Promotions’ ongoing lawsuit with Vergil Ortiz could lead to that event being pushed back.

As for Haney – who won the title from Brian Norman Jr in November last year to become a three-weight champion – he has also expressed interest in fights with Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis and Conor Benn.
