To qualify for the WTA Finals, players need to accumulate the most ranking points throughout the year, and this year’s eight qualified players are Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, and Elena Rybakina.

Young star Mirra Andreeva almost made the cut, but visa problems prevented her from competing in the Japan Open, where she needed to earn enough points, so she now serves as the first alternate. Ekaterina Alexandrova is the second alternate in case anyone withdraws from the championship.

The WTA posted a glamorous photo on Instagram showing all eight players dressed in fancy dresses at the tournament venue. Players wore beautiful outfits in different colors, and the post called the moment “The Ultimate Stage” as fans got excited seeing all eight champions together in Riyadh, ready to compete.

our American players made it to the finals this year, showing strong US tennis talent at the event. Gauff is also the defending champion after beating Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen last year in a thrilling three-set final. The 21-year-old came from behind to secure the victory, and she returns as one of the top contenders to win the tournament.

Keys won the Australian Open earlier in 2025 and earned her spot at the finals after a solid year on tour, while Pegula also represents America at the championship. Anisimova rounds out the American representation, making her first WTA Finals appearance after an impressive season that included two Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. She captured two WTA 1000 titles and reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4.

Sabalenka is currently the World No. 1 and has won the US Open in 2025 along with three other titles this season. Świątek won Wimbledon and stands as one of the top favorites heading into the championship week. Rybakina, who won Wimbledon in 2022, clinched her spot late in the season with strong performances in October and brings her championship experience to Riyadh.

Iga Swiatek navigated her way past a tricky opponent to advance at the Wuhan Open on Thursday.

Swiatek, who made history after her round of 32 triumph, defeated Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic 7-6, 6-4.

The Pole, who is attempting to chase down Aryna Sabalenka for the year-end number one spot, will be hoping to capture a third WTA Tour title of 2025 following successes at Wimbledon and in Korea.

The six-time Grand Slam champion is already a great of the sport, despite being just 24 years old.

And, following her victory over Bencic, she has again forced herself into a conversation with two legends of the sport.

Iga Swiatek has reached 25 WTA 1000 quarter-finals in just 41 matches

Iga Swiatek has continued to shine on the WTA Tour, and her fans will be delighted to read about the Pole’s latest milestone.

As per OptaAce, since the format’s introduction in 2009, only Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have managed 25 quarter-finals in fewer WTA-1000 main draws than Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek has achieved the feat after 41 matches.

Comparatively, Williams and Sharapova accomplished this total after 32 and 39 matches, respectively.

Swiatek will feel confident heading into the quarter-final, as she is playing a rival whom she has never lost to.

In fact, Jasmine Paolini has only won one set against Swiatek.

Will Jasmine Paolini finally defeat Iga Swiatek?

Jasmine Paolini has failed to defeat Iga Swiatek once in six attempts, dating back to 2018.

During their last contest in the 2025 Cincinnati Open final, Paolini led Swiatek by a break in the first set, before losing 7-5, 6-4.

Paolini advanced to the Wuhan Open quarter-finals earlier on Thursday after 10th seed Clara Tauson retired during the third set of their match.

Paolini will hope her fortunes change during their quarter-final clash in Wuhan, set to take place on Friday.

Iga Swiatek’s ‘shocked’ admission as she’s asked about Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova reunion

Iga Swiatek admits she was both “shocked” and “happy” to see Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova together, following a reunion that left the tennis world stunned.

Many were left in disbelief when Williams made a surprise appearance at Sharapova’s Hall of Fame induction last weekend, with the American introducing the Russian ahead of her acceptance speech.

Arguably the two biggest WTA stars of their generation, and maybe the biggest stars in women’s tennis history, Williams and Sharapova were known to have a tense and frosty relationship.

Despite Williams dominating their head-to-head, winning 20 of their 22 clashes, the pair’s matches always attracted huge attention and hype, meeting in four Grand Slam finals.

Signs of the two’s improving relationship have emerged in recent years, with the pair pictured together at the Met Gala previously.

However, few would have predicted Williams to describe Sharapova, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame five years on from her retirement, as her “forever friend” on such a big stage.

And, it wasn’t just tennis fans who were surprised, with six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek also left in shock by the two’s reconciliation.

Speaking after her comfortable opening-round win at the US Open, the world No 2 opened up on why it was so “great” to see the two form a strong bond.

“Honestly, it’s great,” said Swiatek.

“It’s a shame, obviously, that it didn’t happen before when they were on tour together.

“I just thought that their relationship was so tense that I’m just shocked that they managed to work through it.

“I guess if you have good intentions, you can work through everything, you know. So for sure I’m happy to see that.

“I think having that appreciation from your biggest rival, it must be a great feeling. So Maria also deserves that, and Serena, she’s great. So they’re both great.

“I was just happy to see them together, because I feel like we all should be kind of united and going towards one goal as players, even though we’re competing against each other, and that’s one of the examples of that.”

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, will be eligible for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024, five years on from her 2022 retirement.

Considered by many to be the greatest female player of all time, the 43-year-old is a shoo-in to be inducted, though Swiatek herself is all but guaranteed the honour once her playing career is over.

Aged 24, the Pole will likely still have many more years left on tour, though she is already a six-time Grand Slam champion with 125 weeks as the world No 1.

Swiatek is searching for her seventh Grand Slam title, and second straight major, at the US Open this fortnight, and is many people’s favourite to win what would be her second title in New York.

Champion at this tournament back in 2022, second seed Swiatek will face Suzan Lamens in second-round action on Thursday.
