Lamont Roach may have given Gervonta Davis all he could handle, but ‘Tank’ doesn’t see anything special in the former junior lightweight champion.
JUST IN: Jake Paul’s Injuries go From Bad to Worse Ahead of Anthony Joshu
Question marks remain over Gervonta Davis following his performance against Lamont Roach earlier this year.
Davis put his WBA lightweight title on the line against Roach at the Barclays Center in New York back in March, in a bout that most fans expected to be a straightforward defence for ‘Tank.’
It didn’t transpire that way though, as the two men couldn’t be separated at the conclusion of the contest, with it ending in a majority decision draw.

Add to that various comments made about retirement, plus his decision to take a controversial exhibition contest against Jake Paul rather than a rematch with Roach, and it has fans wondering if Davis is still fully focused on his career.
His trainer Calvin Ford has now attempted to ease though concerns, explaining to Fight Hub TV the real reason why ‘Tank’ wasn’t at his best against Roach, and how a shoving incident with Paul at their launch press conference shows him that it won’t happen again.
“Jake crossed the line too close and was in his chest. That’s why Tank was backing him off. When I saw that I saw the glimpse of Tank was still in there.
“Last fight he was too friendly with Roach. I see a little glimpse of it but I understand, he’s trying to stay humble. You see glimpses of it when he’s talking but he’s trying to stay humble and trying to learn how to control the beast.”
The exhibition between Davis and Paul takes place on Friday 14 November at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, and will be broadcast live on Netflix.
On July 11, Gervonta “Tank” Davis (who is the WBA lightweight champion and one of boxing’s biggest stars) was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, on charges of assault after an alleged domestic violence dispute with his ex-girlfriend (who is also the mother of his two children).
The incident occurred on June 15, when Davis allegedly struck the woman on the back of the head. He also allegedly slapped her in the face while she was removing the children from the back of Davis’ car after he came to pick them up for Father’s Day.
The victim reportedly had a cut on her inner lip as a result of this altercation, and her mother (who appeared on the scene after the reported altercation occurred) had a phone recording where Davis could reportedly be seen throwing an object at his ex-girlfriend.
On August 12, Dylan Segelbaum of the Baltimore Banner broke news that the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office decided against filing charges against Davis. This stemmed from Lindsay Chase, an attorney who represents Davis’ ex-girlfriend, reporting via email that she was declining to prosecute Davis.
Segelbaum’s article also notes that any attempts to contact the ex-girlfriend’s mother have been unsuccessful in the wake of Davis’ arrest, and since the police officer who arrived on the scene hadn’t witnessed any of the alleged altercations take place, he couldn’t be used as a witness.
As a result of this verdict, Gervonta is now free to focus on his boxing career for the time being. Of course, he was scheduled to face Lamont Roach on August 16, in a rematch of their March 1 title fight that ended up being a majority draw.
Many believed that Roach deserved to win that controversial fight for various reasons, which could have resulted in Davis receiving the first loss of his professional career. This is why there was a lot of intrigue about this upcoming rematch, which has since been postponed.
Roach made his feelings about Davis’ case getting dropped clear on X Tuesday, as he responded, “🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣” to an X post that featured a video of comedians Druski and Kevin Hart along with streamer Kai Cenat dancing and celebrating together with the caption, “Lamont Roach hearing the Gervonta Davis news today”.
Roach might be thinking that his chances of getting the record straight against Tank in the near future have just become much better, now that this legal case is not an issue.
It was reported today that Davis was arrested in Florida on the morning of Friday, July 11 for allegedly assaulting his ex-partner outside her home on June 15. ‘Tank’ is still on a period of probation from a previous hit-and-run incident.
This latest development on the personal life of Davis throws into doubt his boxing future, which was set to continue with a rematch against Roach after their controversial first meeting in March of this year.

Roach, a big betting underdog, put in a stellar performance, trading with ‘Tank’ in an attempt to win his WBA Lightweight World Title. The champion took a knee in the ninth round but was not given a count by the referee. If he was, and the cards remained the same for the other rounds, Roach would have won a decision rather than the majority draw result that saw Davis retain his belt.
Their highly-anticipated rematch had been pencilled in for August 16 but was lacking an official announcement, leading many in the sport to speculate that it would either be pushed or canned entirely.
Roach took to X after news of his rival’s arrest. First, he posted the message, “what I tell y’all?” alongside a video clip accusing Davis of being scared. He former super-featherweight world champion then followed up with:
“In all seriousness hopefully buddy ain’t do that, I don’t wish jail on no n***a, I don’t give a f**k if I don’t like you or not.”
More news on Davis’ situation is expected soon.
