Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian Claps Back at Critics Accusing Her of Skin Bleaching

Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian just aced this comeback.

The Reddit cofounder, 42, recently addressed online trolls accusing his wife of bleaching her skin.

The tennis icon shared family photos from sister Venus Williams’ wedding on social media Jan. 6, showing Alexis standing next to his favorite ladies: Serena in a white gown and daughters Olympia, 8, and Adira, 2, in matching blue dresses.

The legendary athlete captioned the social media photos, “Joy does not always roar sometimes it whispers. It important to savor those sweet moments… I love this picture so I wanted to share it with you.”

However, some online users speculated that Serena had used products to lighten her skin tone. In response to negative comments about her appearance, Alexis quickly came to her defense, writing alongside her X post, “Where are all the comments from idiots who don’t understand how photography lighting works.”

And when one user claimed, “Alexis wants Black people to believe we don’t know what photography lighting looks like vs blatant skin lightening,” he wrote back, “Or: photos from the same event can look different based on lighting.”

Serena has previously denied accusations of skin bleaching.

During an Instagram Live in December 2024, the 23-time Grand Slam champion addressed claims that she purposely altered her complexion after she shared a video of herself at a school event with Alexis and their two daughters.

Weighing in on the topic, Serena told viewers on the Live, “No, for you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin.”

She went on to explain that she was volunteering at her daughter’s play in the viral video and was wearing “stage makeup” when she recorded the clip in November 2024.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Ooh, she bleached her skin,’” she said. “I’m a dark, Black woman, and I love who I am, and I love how I look.”

Serena Williams surprises fans with a tender and personal family moment

Serena Williams returned to Instagram showing her closest, most personal side, proving that even though she no longer steps on the court, her life remains marked by the strength and passion that always defined her as an athlete.

The post offers a brief look back at her sister Venus Williams’ wedding, where Serena appeared in a bridal dress alongside her daughters and her husband, a memory that previously sparked comments and some controversy among followers of both sisters. Now, without any controversy, Serena shares these moments from an intimate, family-centered perspective.

In the caption, she wrote: “Joy does not always roar; sometimes it whispers. It’s important to savor those sweet moments… I love this picture so I wanted to share it with you.” With this, she made it clear that speculations about who takes the spotlight are irrelevant, and what truly matters are family moments and shared happiness.

A challenge even greater than tennis

Serena Williams surprises fans

Even off the court, Serena remains focused on new personal challenges, from raising her daughters to teaching them healthy habits like eating vegetables, showing that her discipline and consistency also carry over into daily family life.

These small details remind us that even though Serena has closed her sports career, she continues to display her strength and authenticity naturally, creating a close connection with her followers and showing that life can shine in its own way, beyond what anyone might say.

What Coco Gauff once said made Serena Williams the greatest tennis player of all time

Coco Gauff is on track to enjoy a legendary career, and is widely considered one of the biggest names in tennis.

After all, she is a fine ambassador for the sport and a top talent, having already won two Grand Slam titles at the age of just 21.

However, with this promising start to her career, already the comparisons to Serena Williams have come. It really took no time at all.

And yet, despite that immeasurable pressure to emulate arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time, Coco Gauff has responded to such claims with grace and intelligence.

Coco Gauff explains why Serena Williams is the GOAT

Speaking back in 2022 to the National Bank Open, Gauff was keen to reemphasise her point about Williams being the greatest.

This is not a controversial opinion, but it is interesting to see how it is justified, given that it can be argued.

The young American offered a rather staunch defence though, noting: “What makes her the GOAT is her personality and all that she’s done off the court to fight for equality, to fight for young players like me and continue to lead in the way that she does and I think that’s what we really should be focused on.

“That’s just Serena. I don’t think there will be anyone who can do what she did, with all the adversity that she had to face, I don’t think there will be another player that will do that.”

“She’s the GOAT. And undisputed too. In my opinion. But I don’t think that’s an opinion, it’s a fact.

“Serena for me is the GOAT. The GOAT of all GOATs. There will never be another Serena.”

What has Serena Williams said about Coco Gauff in the past?

Serena has also expressed her pride in Gauff’s career thus far too, outlining the immense mutual respect shared between these superstars.

In fact, whenever asked about the youngster, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is always keen to sing her praises.

Even after she beat Venus Williams, her sister, in her famous breakthrough run at Wimbledon in 2019, Serena admitted: “She’s just impressive all around, from her personality to the way she plays. I think it’s just all super impressive.

“I was nowhere near her level at 15 either on the court or off the court, not even close. I know kids are growing up different nowadays, so I’m not sure. But I was nowhere near as smart and eloquent as she is. It’s nice to see.”

Gauff has been praised for doing one thing better than any player since Serena, almost validating the comparisons. It remains to be seen how this will play out over the next decade or two.

It was the fall of 2022 when fans last saw Serena Williams competing on the courts of Flushing Meadows.

After that US Open run, the 23-time Grand Slam champion avoided using the word “retirement,” instead saying she was “evolving away” from the sport. Ever since, fans have been hoping to see her step back onto the court one more time. Now, adding his voice to that chorus is none other than her former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

On December 26, Patrick Mouratoglou shared his 2026 wishlist. As he spoke about everything he hopes for in 2026, one wish clearly stole the spotlight. Mouratoglou expressed his desire to see Serena Williams return to competitive tennis.

Pointing to her recent training videos, he said, “I would love to see in 2026, a comeback from Serena. Why not? We’ve all seen the footage of Serena ripped. She is ready physically. She’s worked hard. She looks so fit, so ready. She loves tennis.”

Mouratoglou can relate: “She posted video of herself playing tennis. I would love to see if she can compete at the age she has, without playing one single tournament for three years, giving birth for a second time,” he continued.

With Williams posting photos and videos of herself on Instagram, showing off her workouts and gains, many fans were left wondering if these were early clues for a return.

“Can she compete with the best? Because she’s Serena; she’s the best of all time. What is her level? I would love to see that. And I know I’m not the only one,” Mouratoglou added.

With her former coach openly believing a Serena Williams comeback is possible, the bigger question is, does Serena Williams herself still have the desire to return at this stage of her career?

Serena Williams breaks silence on her comeback

Speculation around a possible Serena Williams comeback began in September, when she filed paperwork with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The filing exempted her from strict whereabouts requirements, a move that immediately caught fans’ attention and fueled fresh theories about a potential return to professional tennis.

Under ITIA and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules, any player considering a comeback must first comply with out-of-competition testing regulations.

This means being available for drug testing for at least six months before entering a tournament. Williams’ name later appeared on the ITIA’s Registered Testing Pool list dated October 6, further intensifying the discussion.

Soon after the news broke, Williams took to X, posting, “Omg, y’all, I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy,” though her denial has done little to quell fans’ imaginations.

ITIA spokesperson Adrian Bassett confirmed that Williams had requested reinstatement into the testing pool but clarified that it wasn’t a sure sign for a return. “I do not know if this means she is coming back, or just giving herself the option. All I can say is she’s back in the pool and therefore subject to whereabouts,” said Bassett.

The Registered Testing Pool is made up of top singles players, notable doubles and wheelchair athletes, as well as players returning after long absences. So now, while a Serena Williams comeback would undoubtedly excite the tennis world, the final decision ultimately rests with her.

Serena Williams may have stepped away from professional tennis, but her name continues to spark debate and excitement across the sport.

As the tennis world reflects on the highs and lows of the 2025 season, some influential voices are already looking far ahead. Among them is Patrick Mouratoglou, Williams’ former coach, who recently shared his hopes for what the 2026 season could bring, including a surprising wish involving the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Mouratoglou recently outlined his personal vision for the future of women’s tennis on social media, spotlighting several players he believes could define the next era.

While he praised younger stars and their potential growth, his third and most eye-catching desire stood out clearly: seeing Serena Williams compete again on the professional stage. For many fans, the suggestion felt bold, but not entirely unrealistic.

Why a Serena return still captivates tennis fans

Despite officially retiring and welcoming her second child in 2023, Williamshas remained visibly connected to the sport. Recent training clips and workout images shared online have showcased her strength, athleticism, and commitment to fitness.

Mouratoglou pointed to these visuals as proof that Williams appears physically prepared, emphasizing her dedication and enduring love for tennis.

He also acknowledged the challenge such a comeback would present. Returning after several years away from competition, combined with the physical demands of motherhood, would test even the greatest athletes.

Still, Mouratoglou believes Williams’ unmatched mentality and competitive instincts set her apart. In his view, the question is not whether she could play again, but how close she could come to matching the world’s best after such a long break.

Fueling speculation further, Williams’ name recently appeared on the ITIA’s drug testing registry, a routine requirement for active players. While this alone does not confirm a return, it added momentum to ongoing conversations among fans and analysts alike.

Her social media presence, filled with intense training moments, has only amplified curiosity.

The final decision rests entirely with Williams. Having already reshaped tennis history, she has little left to prove. Yet the idea of her testing herself once more remains compelling. As Mouratoglou suggested, tennis lovers everywhere would eagerly watch to see what level Serena Williams could still reach, should she decide the time is right.

Whether or not a comeback ever materializes, the discussion itself highlights Williams’ lasting influence on the sport. Even in retirement, her presence continues to shape expectations, inspire athletes, and remind audiences that greatness does not fade easily with time, age, or changing priorities in life.

Serena Williams Breaks a Major Wedding-Guest Rule in a Plunging Gown With Y2K-Coded Sleeves

As Venus Williams married Andrea Preti in a waterside Palm Beach ceremony over the weekend, her sister and longtime tennis partner, Serena Williams, was by her side during the five-day festivities. In first photos shared of the bridal party by Vogue on December 23, the Serena Ventures founder made a striking appearance in a strapless sweetheart gown with Y2K-inspired sleeves—which also broke a major wedding-guest rule.

Acting as the bride’s maid of honor, Serena made sure her sister’s big day went smoothly and delivered a speech during the nuptials, as seen in photos shared on Instagram by Vogue on Tuesday. The mom-of-two turned heads as she proudly posed in a gown that was a sartorial faux pas: Wearing a white dress to someone else’s wedding. As she posed next to Venus in bridal party photos, Serena flouted wedding-guest dress code in a plunging sweetheart gown with subtle ruching along the bodycon column silhouette. She paired the classic white dress with a surprising Y2K-coded accessory, adding a pair of detached arm warmers that were made out of a sheer white material.

While wearing white as a wedding guest is typically frowned upon, it appears that Serena’s white gown was by design and fully approved by the bride. Serena Williams Congratulates Sister Venus on Marriage to Andrea Preti, Says Seeing Her ‘Built-in Best Friend’ So ‘Loved’ Means ‘Everything’ to Her

The Williams sisters have each other’s backs on the court — and down the aisle.

In a new Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Dec. 23, Serena Williams gushed about her older sister Venus Williams following Venus’ wedding to actor Andrea Preti. “My sister’s keeper,” Serena, 44, began the lengthy caption. “Venus, where do I even begin?”

Serena went on to describe the way she’s seen Venus lead with “grace, strength, and a heart bigger than any trophy” as the two professional tennis players grew from “backyard courts” to “the biggest stages in the world.”

“Watching you step into this next chapter surrounded by love felt like watching the sun rise…steady, powerful, and full of promise,” she continued.

“You’ve been my built-in best friend, my protector, my teacher, and my reminder to always walk in purpose. Seeing you this happy, this loved, this radiant… it means everything to me. To love, to partnership, to laughter, and to a lifetime of choosing each other every single day. I couldn’t be prouder to stand beside you, not just today, but always,” the caption concluded.

Serena wore a white strapless mermaid gown with a sweetheart neckline, flowing cape and detached lace sleeves. Pearl jewelry and pointed-toe heels accessorized the design, as did her old-Hollywood-inspired blonde waves and red manicure.

Serena and Venus Williams Team Up Once Again — But This Time, It’s Off the Court: ‘We’re So Much More Than Sport’ (Exclusive)

While usually taboo for anyone but the bride to wear white, the choice seemed intentionally made by Venus, 45, who also had their two other sisters, Lyndrea Price and Isha Price, niece Justus, and mom Oracene dressed in white.

In the months leading up to the wedding, Serena told PEOPLE during the launch of her and Venus’ new podcast, Stockton Street, in September 2025, that she was busy with “so much planning” ahead of her older sister’s wedding. She noted that Venus leaned on her for help as she’s known as someone who can “get things done.”

Serena also recalled one of their recent planning calls, saying her sister wanted her input on “literally 14 hairstyles.” She explained, “So she sent me her options and within 30 minutes I had them not only done, but in a PDF file what hairstyle looked best on everyone.”

“I’m the person that arranges things, I’m like the planner. I plan everything like the event. I’m the person that gets things done,” she added of her role.

Venus and Preti were first linked in July 2024 when they were seen boating in Nerano, Italy, along the Amalfi Coast. After months of rumors, she finally confirmed the relationship during a post-match interview in July 2025 when she referred to Preti as her “fiancé.”

In 2025, Venus and Preti actually got married twice. The first ceremony came in September, when they tied the knot in Italy. They were wed again on Dec. 19 in a courthouse ceremony in West Palm Beach, Fla., following a full week of festivities before the big day.

Prior to the courthouse ceremony, Venus, Preti, and their guests enjoyed a yacht day, romantic dinner, and a bridal shower.

“For me, the courthouse ceremony was very unique, emotional, and deep,” Preti told Vogue, adding that “it was the second-best day” of his life, after the wedding itself.

What Novak Djokovic said the umpire shouldn’t have done after Serena Williams controversy at the US Open in 2018

Novak Djokovic gave his say after Serena Williams was involved in controversy at the 2018 US Open.

Both Djokovic and Williams reached their respective singles finals at the US Open that year, but they had very different outcomes.

Williams was beaten by Naomi Osaka in her final, which was marred with controversy after she was given a game penalty for branding chair umpire Carlos Ramos ‘a thief’.

After Djokovic beat Juan Martin del Potro to win the US Open men’s singles title, he was asked for his verdict on the situation.

How Novak Djokovic reacted to the Serena Williams controversy at the 2018 US Open

Williams initially received a warning for coaching, before being docked a point after smashing her racket.

This led to Williams branding Ramos ‘a thief’, to which she was docked a game, before Osaka would beat her to claim her first Grand Slam title.

Williams received a lot of criticism for her behaviour in this final, but Djokovic was not willing to continue the backlash and instead claimed that chair umpire Ramos should not have pushed her so far.

“Look, I love Serena, first of all. I really felt for her yesterday,” Djokovic said in his press conference after winning the US Open in 2018. “Tough thing for a chair umpire to deal with, as well. We have to empathize with him. Everyone was in a very awkward situation yesterday. A lot of emotions. Serena was crying. Naomi was crying. It was really, really tough.

“But I have my personal opinion that maybe the chair umpire should not have pushed Serena to the limit, especially in a Grand Slam final. Just maybe changed — not maybe, but he did change the course of the match. Was, in my opinion, maybe unnecessary. We all go through our emotions, especially when you’re fighting for a Grand Slam trophy.

“But I don’t think it’s time and place really to get into other subjects. I don’t see things as Mr. [Steve] Simon (WTA Chairman at the time) does. I really don’t. I think men and women are, you know, treated in this way or the other way depending on the situation. It’s hard to generalize things, really. I don’t see it’s necessary really to debate that.

“I just feel like, as Serena said yesterday in the closing ceremonies, Osaka deserves to have her moment. As for Serena, she knows I love her. She really inspires everyone. To see her still being so dedicated and so committed to this sport, it’s inspiring really to me and to many tennis players, both men and women, around the world.”

What Serena Williams said when Novak Djokovic was disqualified at the US Open

Just two years later, Djokovic was involved in a controversy of his own at the US Open after being disqualified from his fourth round match against Pablo Carreno Busta.

This came after Djokovic inadvertently hit the line judge with the ball in her neck area, which was perhaps the biggest talking point of the 2020 tournament.

The roles were reversed on this occasion, and Williams was asked what she thought about Djokovic’s disqualification.

However, Williams was not willing to give her opinion on the situation and gave a short response to the question.

“I’m not going to touch that,” Williams said in her post-match press conference. “I’m going to leave that to you guys. I’m just not touching it.”

Serena Williams once admitted the biggest disappointment of her entire tennis career and it wasn’t even a defeat

Serena Williams certainly had lows during her career, but they were massively outweighed by the highs.

Williams is one of the most decorated players in tennis, with 73 WTA Tour titles won throughout her phenomenal career.

The American superstar clinched 23 Grand Slam titles, and also managed to climb to number one in the world rankings.

Along with individual success, Williams enjoyed a glittering doubles career, mostly alongside her sister Venus Williams.

Serena Williams left devastated by 2004 Olympic withdrawal

But Serena felt she was letting her sister and many others down when she decided against playing at the 2004 Olympics.

Williams was forced to withdraw from the event due to a knee injury, having been scheduled to play singles and doubles in Athens.

As quoted by BBC Sport, she said at the time: “I’ve never been this disappointed in my career. The good news is I don’t need surgery. That’s the only good news.

“I am sad and disappointed, not only because I am unable to travel to Greece and participate in the Olympics, but also because I gave my word that I would play.

“I feel that I am letting down my sister Venus, coach Zina Garrison and the other members of the US team by not participating.”

How did Serena Williams and Venus Williams perform at the Olympics?

While Williams was understandably frustrated, her Olympic disappointment with the USA was short-lived.

She would go on to win the singles gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, as well as claiming doubles gold that year and also in 2000 and 2008.

Venus was by Serena’s side for all three doubles triumphs, with the former also clinching gold in singles in 2000 and silver in mixed doubles in 2016.

Chanda Rubin was the player given the impossible task of filling Serena’s shoes in 2004, but she fell in the first round alongside Venus in Athens that year.

Why Donald Trump defended Serena Williams during the 2009 US Open

For over two decades, Serena Williams was the dominant force on the women’s circuit. The fact that she hailed from America helped her to become a global icon.

She has long been proud of her roots, emerging from Compton as a plucky teenager, alongside her supremely talented sister, to the top of a sport often seen as inaccessible for people like her.

However, she defied the odds time and time again, and upset a lot of people whilst doing it.

Whether it was her overwhelming power, unrelenting dominance or outspoken personality, people always had something to say.

It was refreshing to see Donald Trump, of all people, actually rush to her defence back in 2009.

Why Serena Williams was under fire at the 2009 US Open

As she took on Kim Clijsters in the semi-final of the US Open that year, she found herself in a tricky position during the crucial second set.

Trailing 5-6 and 15-30, the umpire controversially called a foot fault on a second serve, thus handing the Belgian a match point.

Williams reacted with fury, swearing and threatening to shove a tennis ball down her throat, resulting in another point penalty, which decided the match.

Naturally, people rushed to lambast her reaction, but Trump was not one of them. He instead argued: “The backlash against Serena has been relentless and she has been treated badly.”

“She has apologised, and I think enough is enough.”

He continued: “Serena is a great champion — and she should be allowed to move on to bigger and better things than apologizing on Twitter and elsewhere.”

“The line judge made a very evident mistake, and she is the one who should be apologising.”

Serena Williams’ turbulent history with umpires

This was not the first, nor was it the last run-in that Serena had with chair umpires.

In fact, at the US Open alone, she boasts a myriad of controversial and explosive moments involving the officials.

Back in 2004, she was subject to a string of line calls going against her as she lost to Jennifer Capriati in a match that is widely considered to be the catalyst for the introduction of Hawkeye.

Then in 2011, Williams was penalised for celebrating after she hit a scorching winner past Sam Stosur in the final. She branded the umpire ‘a hater’ and said she was ‘unattractive inside’.

However, perhaps her most controversial moment came during the 2019 US Open final, which she lost to Naomi Osaka.

There, she had a series of arguments throughout the match with umpire Carlos Ramos, eventually accusing him of sexism.

The 44-year-old refused to shake his hand and instead insisted afterwards: “You owe me an apology.”
