Serena Williams once admitted the biggest disappointment of her entire tennis career and it wasn’t even a defeat

Serena Williams certainly had lows during her career, but they were massively outweighed by the highs.

Williams is one of the most decorated players in tennis, with 73 WTA Tour titles won throughout her phenomenal career.

The American superstar clinched 23 Grand Slam titles, and also managed to climb to number one in the world rankings.

Along with individual success, Williams enjoyed a glittering doubles career, mostly alongside her sister Venus Williams.

Serena Williams left devastated by 2004 Olympic withdrawal

But Serena felt she was letting her sister and many others down when she decided against playing at the 2004 Olympics.

Williams was forced to withdraw from the event due to a knee injury, having been scheduled to play singles and doubles in Athens.

As quoted by BBC Sport, she said at the time: “I’ve never been this disappointed in my career. The good news is I don’t need surgery. That’s the only good news.

“I am sad and disappointed, not only because I am unable to travel to Greece and participate in the Olympics, but also because I gave my word that I would play.

“I feel that I am letting down my sister Venus, coach Zina Garrison and the other members of the US team by not participating.”

How did Serena Williams and Venus Williams perform at the Olympics?

While Williams was understandably frustrated, her Olympic disappointment with the USA was short-lived.

She would go on to win the singles gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, as well as claiming doubles gold that year and also in 2000 and 2008.

Venus was by Serena’s side for all three doubles triumphs, with the former also clinching gold in singles in 2000 and silver in mixed doubles in 2016.

Chanda Rubin was the player given the impossible task of filling Serena’s shoes in 2004, but she fell in the first round alongside Venus in Athens that year.

Why Donald Trump defended Serena Williams during the 2009 US Open

For over two decades, Serena Williams was the dominant force on the women’s circuit. The fact that she hailed from America helped her to become a global icon.

She has long been proud of her roots, emerging from Compton as a plucky teenager, alongside her supremely talented sister, to the top of a sport often seen as inaccessible for people like her.

However, she defied the odds time and time again, and upset a lot of people whilst doing it.

Whether it was her overwhelming power, unrelenting dominance or outspoken personality, people always had something to say.

It was refreshing to see Donald Trump, of all people, actually rush to her defence back in 2009.

Why Serena Williams was under fire at the 2009 US Open

As she took on Kim Clijsters in the semi-final of the US Open that year, she found herself in a tricky position during the crucial second set.

Trailing 5-6 and 15-30, the umpire controversially called a foot fault on a second serve, thus handing the Belgian a match point.

Williams reacted with fury, swearing and threatening to shove a tennis ball down her throat, resulting in another point penalty, which decided the match.

Naturally, people rushed to lambast her reaction, but Trump was not one of them. He instead argued: “The backlash against Serena has been relentless and she has been treated badly.”

“She has apologised, and I think enough is enough.”

He continued: “Serena is a great champion — and she should be allowed to move on to bigger and better things than apologizing on Twitter and elsewhere.”

“The line judge made a very evident mistake, and she is the one who should be apologising.”

Serena Williams’ turbulent history with umpires

This was not the first, nor was it the last run-in that Serena had with chair umpires.

In fact, at the US Open alone, she boasts a myriad of controversial and explosive moments involving the officials.

Back in 2004, she was subject to a string of line calls going against her as she lost to Jennifer Capriati in a match that is widely considered to be the catalyst for the introduction of Hawkeye.

Then in 2011, Williams was penalised for celebrating after she hit a scorching winner past Sam Stosur in the final. She branded the umpire ‘a hater’ and said she was ‘unattractive inside’.

However, perhaps her most controversial moment came during the 2019 US Open final, which she lost to Naomi Osaka.

There, she had a series of arguments throughout the match with umpire Carlos Ramos, eventually accusing him of sexism.

The 44-year-old refused to shake his hand and instead insisted afterwards: “You owe me an apology.”

Serena Williams’ dad ‘King Richard’ reveals he called and begged her to do more tournaments after her last match

SERENA Williams’ dad ‘King Richard’ says he called to beg her to play a few more tournaments after her last match, so she would officially be ‘the greatest of all time,’

Former coach King Richard, 80, who trained both Serena and her sister Venus since childhood, didn’t think she should hang her racket up at this point in her career.

Tennis icon Serena announced in August that she was moving away from the sport to focus on other business endeavors, and expand her young family.

The 41-year-old, who already has a five-year-old daughter, Olympia, with husband Alexis Ohanian, wrote a moving cover story for US VOGUE about her difficult decision to step away.

“There are people who say I’m not the GOAT because I didn’t pass Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles, which she achieved before the ‘open era’ that began in 1968,” she wrote in the moving piece.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Obviously, I do. But day to day, I’m really not thinking about her.”

Serena played the final match of her professional career in September at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City during the U.S. Open.

Although she lost to Australian player Ajla Tomljanovic, the game was reportedly the most-viewed in ESPN history with an average of 4.2 million viewers tuning in.

Her father Richard, who has had multiple strokes and sometimes struggles with communication issues as a result, gave a rare interview to The U.S. Sun this month.

Sitting beside his son Chavoita LeSane at their home in Florida, he said he was incredibly proud of both his daughters, and knew Serena’s career was coming to an end.

Although he is reluctant to speak about them now they are household names, he revealed he wanted Serena to push on and possibly beat Court’s record.

MOTHERHOOD DREAMS

Richard, who has been described as a “controversial and contentious figure” in the tennis world, told The U.S. Sun: “I wanted her to play at least a couple more tournaments. She said no, she won’t do it.

“I asked Serena about maybe six weeks ago, two months ago, probably. But she’s done a great deal, she has lots of other businesses and is very successful.

“Her baby [Olympia] is unbelievable. She already speaks English and French very well … that child is doing extremely well,” adding that he’s hoping to be a grandfather again soon and now supports Serena’s decision.

He added: “I said, ‘Why don’t you play?’ She said, ‘I could. I think I could win, but I can’t do it no more. Yeah, I won’t do it no more.’”

Richard said she’s “extremely happy” despite her decision and is an “incredible mom,” who is still humble despite her wealth and is raising her daughter well.

The star and her famous sister have a number of other businesses they run, with Serena having started a venture capital firm in recent years.

I was proud of them before they were even born.”

Richard Williams on his daughters Serena and Venus.

She admitted in her VOGUE article that she had wrestled with the idea of leaving tennis for some time, saying: “I’ve been reluctant to admit that I have to move on from playing tennis. It’s like a taboo topic.

“It comes up, and I start to cry. I think the only person I’ve really gone there with is my therapist.”

She also spoke of becoming a mother again, revealing her daughter Olympia told her all she wants to be when she grows up is a “big sister.”

“Olympia says this a lot, even when she knows I’m listening. Sometimes before bed, she prays to Jehovah to bring her a baby sister. [She doesn’t want anything to do with a boy!]

“I’m the youngest of five sisters myself, and my sisters are my heroes, so this has felt like a moment I need to listen very carefully to.”

Talking about both his daughters, her father Richard chuckled: “I was proud of them before they were even born,” as he hatched a plan to turn them into tennis greats, even writing a 78-page manifesto outlining a blueprint for success.

But Richard says if they were welcomed into the world in 2023, he wouldn’t want them to play tennis at all.

“I wanted them to get money out of tennis, but it’s a totally different world today, I’d have them focus on businesses as they have now, they’re extraordinary,” he said.

VENUS’S FUTURE

His son Chavoita elaborated: “I think what he means is, he sees life so differently. He realized in tennis there’s a ceiling, and the ceiling is here [tournament wins].

“But when you’re in business, there is no ceiling, certain businesses. The sky’s the limit.”

Asked what the girls would have done if they hadn’t played tennis, Richard revealed: “Serena wanted to be an animal doctor, and Venus wanted to be an engineer I believe.”

Venus, 42, recently dropped out of the Australian Open due to injury and there have been whispers she may also be set to retire in the coming months.

Her father believes she is more passionate about playing tennis than settling down right now, but she may also quit and focus on other projects.

Asked if he thinks she’ll start a family of her own, he said: “I don’t think so, no I really don’t think so. She really loves kids, but I don’t think she’ll have kids. [And] I think she could be quitting [tennis] very soon.”

Venus has had a number of health struggles throughout her career, including being diagnosed with Sjorgren’s syndrome – a rare autoimmune disease, which can cause joint pain, numbness, and swelling.

She owns her own fashion brand and has also hinted she may follow in her father’s footsteps and coach tennis, which he approves of.

FILM SUCCESS

She recently said: “I love learning, and I love teaching. Believe it or not, I love teaching beginner’s tennis.

“I love that moment when people’s eyes light up, and they think, ‘Oh, I get it now!’ You just have to be coachable.”

The Hollywood biopic King Richard, starring Will Smith as Willaims, told the Serena and Venus story through their father’s eyes – and how he encouraged them to be successful.

Will won the Best Actor statue at the 2022 Oscars for his portrayal of no-nonsense Richard, who was thrilled with the film after initially expressing concern he may be villainized in the movie.

His son described his father as “phenomenal” and said although he’s not a big tennis fan and doesn’t watch matches, he can appreciate what his dad did for the game.

“When I look at the achievements of him as a father, tennis coach, tennis manager, being trained by someone named Old Whiskey, it’s quite amazing. It’s mind-blowing.

“I think my father went very far in tennis, in spite of being criticized a lot, even though I never really pay attention to criticism.

“It’s amazing to look at what Venus and Serena have achieved, especially with them being Afro-Americans, and having to jump over so many hurdles.”

Serena Williams sets social media alight with another cryptic tweet that could once again hint at her return

Serena Williams has reignited speculation about a potential return to the WTA Tour after posting yet another cryptic message on social media, a move that immediately sent tennis fans and commentators into overdrive.

The retired 23-time Grand Slam champion has made a habit of subtly teasing her followers, but this latest hint arrived just hours after Billie Jean King offered a bold public endorsement of her ability to compete again.

Serena Williams continues to tease at a return to tennis, just days...

READ: Serena Williams reveals a challenge bigger than the ones she face

Days after rumors floated around that she could return, Williams shared a brief but firm line on X, telling fans: “I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”

Yet, another cryptic post emerged, and now tennis fans don’t know what to think. She posted: “Feeling strongly about claiming my mojo back.”

Quite what she was referring to is anyone’s guess. But many could interpret that as getting back on the court, especially with her sister Venus returning at the age of 44.

A legend whose influence has never faded

Since stepping away following the 2022 US Open, Serena Williams has remained central to cultural and sporting discussions.

Throughout that time she has referenced her love of competition and admitted that part of her still misses the thrill of elite play.

The tennis world has been quick to react each time she hints at reconsidering retirement, and this moment was no different.

Her message followed comments from Billie Jean King, who insisted that Williams is still capable of challenging the top of the women’s game.

King’s support carries weight: the tennis icon has long argued that Serena’s physicality, serve, and competitive fire remain unparalleled, even in a landscape now dominated by players like Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek, who has spent much of the past two seasons at No. 1, has often described Serena as her greatest inspiration, an acknowledgment that only adds fuel to the debate about how Williams might fare in the modern field.

The hype surrounding a potential comeback has grown louder in recent months. Williams has remained deeply connected to tennis through commentary, youth-focused initiatives, and her close friendships on the tour.

Her cryptic messaging style-never too explicit, never fully dismissive-has become part of the ongoing narrative of what a comeback might look like.

Her supporters argue that the current WTA environment, with emerging contenders and fluctuating leadership at the top, could provide a perfect opening for another Williams run.

Others believe that her legacy is already untouchable, and any return would be driven purely by personal desire rather than unfinished business.

Does Serena have unfinished business?

At the heart of the speculation is a simple truth: few athletes in history have retired with as much perceived untapped potential.

Whether comparing her to past rivals or evaluating her potential impact against players like Amanda Anisimova or the ever-steady Swiatek, analysts routinely conclude that no one has duplicated the aura, power, or mental toughness that defined Williams at her peak.

And Serena knows it. Her occasional public hints seem carefully designed to maintain connection without committing to anything definitive. They keep her fans hopeful, the sport engaged, and the conversation alive.

For now, her latest message offers no promises and she is content with her family life as mother to her daughters Alexis Olympia and Adira River.

But if history has taught the tennis world anything, it is that a whisper from Serena Williams can shift the global conversation. Whether it leads to one more match remains to be seen, but the anticipation continues to build one tweet at a time.

Serena Williams reveals a challenge bigger than the ones she faced in her career

After retiring from professional tennis, Serena Williams put down her rackets and left the tournaments behind, but life hasn’t stopped presenting her with new challenges. In a recent TikTok video, the former tennis star offered a glimpse into her daily life, answering questions about beauty, habits, and motherhood, showing that challenges off the court can be even more demanding than any competition she ever faced.

One of the most revealing questions was: “Okay, what’s harder, winged eyeliner or getting your kids to eat veggies?” Serena answered honestly and with humor: “Getting my kids to eat veggies, for sure.” That simple moment perfectly summed up how, even though her days of intense matches are over, she now faces motherly challenges that require strategy, patience and endurance just like any professional match.

A challenge tougher than tennis

In the video, her youngest daughter, Adira River Ohanian, even hesitated to join the Q&A, highlighting the spontaneity and naturalness of the moment. Serena also shared little everyday anecdotes: offering snacks to calm tantrums, letting her daughters wear her heels if they ever ask, or dealing with broken nails. Each detail reflected how a champion’s discipline and humor translate into her family life, balancing demands with enjoyment.

Through this glimpse into her routine, Serena shows that life after tennis can be just as or even more demanding than any match she’s ever played. Her honesty and down-to-earth approach in sharing simple, real moments as a mother resonated with everyone, reminding us that behind the sports legend is also a mom facing daily challenges with the same determination that took her to the top.

Serena Williams has one word top of mind when it comes to health – longevity.

The 44-year-old tennis star opened up about her experience with GLP-1 medications in August after partnering with healthcare company Ro. She’s also teamed up with Lingo by Abbott, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that tracks glucose in your interstitial fluids.

After she stopped playing tennis, she became obsessed with healthy eating and living. She’s used Lingo since its U.S. launch in September 2024, and tracking her health data has empowered her to make more informed food choices and leave the word “diet” behind.

More than 80% of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it, as it often has no symptoms. However, it’s very common. More than 1 in 3 U.S. adults have prediabetes. While it’s possible to reverse prediabetes, it’s typically not possible to reverse diabetes complications, making prevention and proper management essential.

It’s an issue that hits close to home for Williams, who has a family history of diabetes. Lingo’s mission is to help people understand how their body reacts to different dietary choices, which sometimes can reveal early signs worth paying attention to.

CGMs for non-diabetics have picked up steam as a new wellness trend, but not everyone in the health field is so bullish on their prospects for everyone. But Williams says preventative health is all about finding balance, even if she falls closer to one end of the spectrum.

“Who am I kidding? I’m not balanced. I’m definitely an extremist,” Williams says over the phone from Florida. “But I also want what’s best for myself, and I think other people do too.”

She shares two children − Olympia, 7, and Adira, 2 − with husband Alexis Ohanian (an investor in Ro), for whom she wants to stay as healthy as possible.

“Who doesn’t want longevity? Because that’s what it all boils down to,” she adds.

What are CGMs?

CGMs are small sensors placed under the skin of your arm that send data to your smartphone and offer insights on your blood sugar levels. It’s a tool diabetics may use, and it can even connect to an insulin pump (Lingo is not used for managing diseases, including diabetes, and cannot connect to an insulin pump).

Some nutrition experts say a CGM can be valuable for non-diabetics by encouraging them to choose healthier foods and stave off chronic disease. However, some people with diabetes feel this wellness trend trivializes their experience, especially since many patients can’t access these lifesaving devices due to the cost.

Dr. Robert Shmerling, senior faculty editor of Harvard Health Publishing at Harvard Medical School, previously told USA TODAY he thinks continuous glucose monitoring is marketing getting ahead of the science. If you aren’t diabetic, for example, he says the research doesn’t support CGMs as effective.

But people who use CGMs – like Williams – may still find them valuable. Some non-diabetic CGM users have even discovered they were experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, helping them get proper care sooner.

How GLP-1s and Lingo fit into Williams’ big picture of health

When announcing her partnership with Ro, Williams shared that she lost 31 pounds on the GLP-1 drug Zepbound, a type of medication typically prescribed for diabetes and now also used for weight management.

“My story with Ro and GLP-1s, I did everything to get healthy, and I wasn’t getting there,” she explains. She considers fad diets a thing of the past, given the technology people now have access to.

“I think fad diets were great because that’s all we had back then,” she says. “Everyone was still trying to be healthy and trying their best. But this (Lingo) is something that actually works. You can make real-time decisions.” The Lingo app will even send her reminders to take a walk or do 10 squats.

She feels better than ever on GLP-1s and says using Lingo has been a good contributor to monitoring her health throughout this journey.

“There are positives and negatives to all types of things, and you have to decide if that’s what you want,” she says.

‘My life has been health’

With 23 Grand Slam titles, Williams spent her life optimizing her performance. And while she’s carried that mentality into motherhood, part of her focus has shifted to her kids’ nutrition.

“As an athlete, health is our life,” she says. “And even more so as a mom, I really watch how I prepare food.”

Williams cooks for her children five to six days a week, and wants to pass down healthy eating habits.

“Lingo has really helped me understand what I’m eating,” she adds. “I just take that education, just throughout my life, and transfer it to things I’m learning for my kids.”

Uncertainty surrounds the figure of Serena Williams in recent seasons.

It has been over three years since the American legend played her last match in competition: the third round of the US Open 2022 where she lost in the third set against Ajla Tomljanovic.

At the age of 44, rumors of a possible comeback to the courts resurfaced stronger than ever this past week when she appeared registered in the anti-doping program that would allow her to play from April 2026. Despite the excitement generated by this move, Serena herself came out to deny this news.

“She keeps the option open, but she won’t return unless she’s certain she can compete at her best,” confessed Patrick Mouratoglou as reported by Express Sport. The French coach, who was Serena Williams’ coach for 10 years, took the opportunity to point out the keys to a potential return of the champion.

Serena Williams’ Real Opportunity

“Maybe it crossed her mind because she is in excellent shape, as everyone saw. It seems she has returned to being an elite athlete after becoming a mother. Perhaps it crossed her mind, and perhaps that opportunity presented itself. But to open up an opportunity and take advantage of it, I think there is still a long way to go, so I suppose we will find out in a few months if it happens.

I believe that when Serena wants something and fully commits to it, few things are impossible for her. I suppose if she’s considering a return, she will only do it if she believes she can compete with the best; otherwise, she won’t. That’s not her mentality. It never has been. It’s impressive, Serena and Venus are incredible athletes, I think they are above most players, so, for them, it is more possible than for many others.”

The Williams Sisters

“They have an incredible competitive mindset that has made them who they are, multiple Grand Slam champions, and Serena even in a different league. But both have the competitiveness, the ability to win matches, and for their age, they are still in excellent shape because, first, they continue to train, and second, they are incredible athletes.”

The supportive message Tiger Woods sent Serena Williams after her last professional match

In 2022, tennis legend Serena Williams played her final competitive match on the WTA Tour.

Serena, an icon of tennis, played her last match against Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open, losing the contest 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.

Her exit from the sport triggered an outpouring of emotion from fans and peers. Understandably so after a career that spanned almost 27 years.

After losing to Tomljanovic, Woods posted a congratulatory message on X [Twitter.]

He said: “Serena Williams, you’re literally the greatest on and off the court. Thank you for inspiring all of us to pursue our dreams. I love you little sis!!!!!!”

Recently, Serena had been rumoured to be making a return to professional tennis after she had re-registered with the sport’s drug-testing body, the International Tennis Integrity Agency [ITIA].

However, the American has since vehemently denied that she will be making a return.

Whether or not Serena returns to the sport is a debate that will roll on. What cannot be debated is her standing in the game.

Coco Gauff proved to be one of the dominant figures of the tennis scene this season.

After a busy season, the young tennis player wants to use the rest period to set goals for the next season, and she is aware that serious challenges await her. Throughout her career, Coco Gauff has always been guided by certain role models such as Serena Williams, a tennis player who built a magnificent career and was an example for many.

In an interview with Forbes, the 21-year-old spoke about her relationship with Serena Williams and the influence that the famous tennis player has on her.

Gauff revealed how their first meeting came about.

The young American surprised the public by revealing how she and Williams met.

“Yeah I think I was like 10 or 11 years old, and they actually needed a body double for a shoot that she was doing to play a younger version of her.

And so at the last minute, they asked me to do it and I did it, and I got to meet her at the shoot. I don’t even know if she knew I played tennis at the time or anything like that, but she was just so kind.

And I think later on in the shoot someone must have told her that I play tennis, so she was just like, ‘Oh, keep believing in yourself, work hard’, the typical rundown.

But as a kid you’re just grasping onto everything. And I just remember her walking by and it just felt like, not real.”- she said, as quoted by The Tennis Gazette.

Useful tip for Coco

However, Coco Gauff later stressed that it was not the best advice she received from Williams, considering that later, when she became a professional tennis player, she received many useful tips.

Serena, as an experienced figure, wanted to guide her on the right path and help her become as great as possible.

Serena’s advice still rings in her ears, especially the one about focusing on her own path and expectations for herself, not others.

“No, over time when I grew up and she started to grasp maybe who I was, I think for me, she told me that there’s ups and downs on this journey, and also with the outside noise and things like that, and just trying to focus on your pathway, and your expectations of yourself and not expectations placed by others, because obviously she’s the GOAT, so she had to experience so much pressure. So just trying to remind me of that.”- she concluded.

Coco Gauff is only 21 years old and has already shown the diversity of her talent and potential. Many predict a brilliant career and even greater success, and there is hope that one day Gauff will find her place on the throne and be at the top of the WTA rankings.

Serena Williams breaks her silence on shock report tennis legend is set to unretire three years after last match

Serena Williams has played down reports she is set for a shock return to tennis, despite re-entering herself in to the drug testing pool required for all active players.

According to tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg, Williams is in line for a return to professional tennis more than three years on from her final match at the US Open.

The tennis icon, 44, who won 23 Grand Slam singles titles in an historic career, has been inactive since September 2022 but has now officially applied for reinstatement.

The decision sets her up for a return to the top level of tennis in 2026, and she has been added back in to the drug testing pool required for all active players.

However, Williams poured cold water on the report later on Tuesday by posting on X: ‘Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy’.

Serena, whose 45-year-old sister Venus is also still active, lost her final match against Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open in 2022, and she applied for retirement with the International Tennis Integrity Agency a day later.

That decision meant she longer had to provide her daily whereabouts for random drug tests, but it is being reported that she has returned to that pool.

Rothenberg’s ‘Bounces’ website also reports that Williams had explored the possibility of returning sooner, seeking reinstatement ahead of this year’s US Open, but was knocked back by officials.

It is understood that she had planned to play doubles with Venus in New York – something that will be possible by the spring of 2026, in time for the French Open if she so wishes.

It is as yet unclear exactly when she filed for reinstatement, but Williams’ name does appear on an October list of players registered for drugs testing, seemingly confirming her decision to return to the court.

Serena has been in the spotlight in recent months for her usage of the GLP-1 weight loss drug Zepbound, which she has openly spoken about on adverts for the health company Ro.

She has lost an incredible 30lbs this year, after giving birth to her second daughter Adira.

GLP-1s are not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and are also not included on the 2026 list of prohibited substances, per Rothenberg’s reporting.

They are, though, on the ‘monitoring program’, meaning that usage and effects of the drugs are being observed by WADA’s scientists.

Despite officially ‘retiring’, Williams has previously sparked rumors of a comeback by claiming that the ‘chances of me returning are very high’.

In a recent interview with Net-A-Porter, she spoke in-depth about the scrutiny she faced on the court.

‘In tennis you can’t really be yourself, which sounds weird, but you have to keep a veil up,’ she said.

She was also asked whether she missed the sport, adding: ‘Not as much as this time last year. No matter how prepared you are to retire, and particularly from doing something every day at such a high level, it’s hard.

‘I really prepped myself the best way I could, but it’s something that’s still a little difficult.’

Despite three years away from the court, the 44-year-old remains in incredible shape and recently showed off her bikini body on vacation with her family.
