Serena Williams Opens Up About Her Down-to-Earth Friendship With Duchess Meghan

The world may have been shocked when American tennis legend Serena Williams showed up to Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s royal wedding at Windsor Castle in 2018, but they shouldn’t have been, as the women have been close friends for 15 years.

Meghan and Williams first met at Super Bowl XLIV when the New Orleans Saints faced off against the Indianapolis Colts in 2010. It was held in Miami Gardens, Florida. At the time, Meghan was in a serious relationship with film producer Trevor Engelson, whom she began dating in 2004 and married in 2011. (The two divorced in 2013, three years before Meghan met Harry.)

In Meghan’s December cover story for Harper’s Bazaar, Williams recalls her instant connection with the now-duchess. “We both definitely have a dry sense of humor. I think that’s why we hit it off for no reason at this silly football thing. We were just like, ‘Why are we here? To meet you?’ Apparently, and we’ve been lifelong friends ever since,” she says.

Since then, their friendship has only deepened, as they have both navigated being entrepreneurs, mothers, and media targets—separately, but together.

“We love a good mimosa,” Williams says. “We could talk for a hundred hours, and it feels like 10 minutes go by, and it’s like we never stop smiling.”

Meghan says their friendship is easy: “I don’t like things that feel overly realized. If you overwork the dough, it’s not going to rise. And sometimes I think the stress that people put on moments … they are so consumed in them that you lose the fun of why you are doing something.”

And Williams says Meghan helps her be a better mother: “She’s just so smart, and I feel like no matter what, I can always learn from her.” She adds that the last time the two hung out, Meghan “was talking about this amazing woman who is really helpful and how to talk to kids. I’m implementing so much that she’s teaching me.”

Drake reignites Serena Williams feud with pointed dig during raunchy photoshoot with Sexyy Red

Drake has seemingly reignited his long-running feud with ex-girlfriend Serena Williams after making a pointed dig at the tennis star on his Instagram.

On Monday, the Canadian rapper – who previously dated Williams from 2011 to 2015 – took to the social media platform to share a picture alongside fellow artist ‘Sexyy Red’.

The duo posed for a series of tennis-themed photos, with Drake captioning it: ‘I said tennis lesson she said where’s the bracelet or the necklace’.

However, eagle-eyed fans were quick to note a subtle dig from the ‘Hotling Bling’ rapper, when they headed down into the comment section.

They noticed that Drake had liked one comment from a user, which read: ‘Serena Williams upgrade [fire emojis]’.

It marks just the latest subtle dig between Drake and Williams, who have been consistently throwing shade at one another in recent years.

One user commented: 'Serena Williams upgrade' which the 'Hotline Bling' rapper liked

Perhaps the most notable incident was when tennis star Williams made a surprise cameo in Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 Super Bowl performance earlier this year.

Williams showed up and started dancing while Lamar was performing his song ‘Not Like Us’ – a diss track from his beef with Canadian rapper Drake.

She wasn’t seen up close, but a tweet from the tennis icon after the game showed her in the exact same outfit as the performance.

‘Let’s go Super Bowl halftime??! I died a little!,’ the star tweeted.

The sight of Williams c-walking on a stage as big as this sent social media into hysterics.

In the midst of their Drake’s beef with Lamar, Serena delivered a jab of her own at the 2024 ESPYS, which she hosted: ‘If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us – not a single one of us, not even me – should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar.’

She added: ‘He will make your hometown not like you. The next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, they’re gonna Forrest Gump him, “seat’s taken”.’

Shortly after Williams’ shock appearance at the Super Bowl, Drake seemingly made a subtle dig at the 23-time Grand Slam winner on his private Instagram account.

Drake and the tennis icon were first romantically linked back in 2011 - and Serena shocked fans when she was spotted Crip walking to a Drake diss song during a Kendrick Lamar performance

In response, the Canadian-born rapper took a thinly veiled dig at Williams when he posted a photo of himself with her former agent, Jill Smoller

In response, the Canadian-born rapper took a thinly veiled dig at Williams, 43, when he posted a photo of himself with her former agent, Jill Smoller.

The image was taken in 2015 when he attended Wimbledon to watch Serena compete in a match.

Drake – whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham – opted to not add a caption to the picture, but left the comment section open to allow social media users to offer their own thoughts.

Drake and Williams were first romantically linked in 2011 and four years later in 2015, the pair were spotted together on various occasions – such as kissing at a Cincinnati restaurant.

However, the two stars went their separate ways and the following year in 2016 – he dropped the track Too Good where he appeared to reference the tennis player.

The lyrics in the chorus are: ‘I’m too good to you/ I’m way too good to you/ You take my love for granted/ I just don’t understand it.’

Williams later tied the knot with Alex Ohanian in 2017 and Drake seemingly reference to her husband in his 2022 song titled Middle of the Ocean.

Game, Set, Perfect Match: Inside Serena Williams Love Story With Alexis Ohanian

It’s no surprise that Alexis Ohanian simply aced his first date with tennis legend Serena Williams.

For the first half of the 2015 outing, the Reddit cofounder served up answer after answer as Williams, her assistant and agent Jill Smoller “just bombarded me with questions—it was like two hours of interrogation,” the 42-year-old recounted in Williams’ 2024 ESPN+ docuseries In The Arena. “‘Do I have kids? Am I married?’ Nothing was off limits.”

Then he swooped in with a tidbit that truly saved the day.

“He started talking about Iron Man and Marvel,” Williams detailed. “That’s the way to my heart.”

It’s just one of many trick plays the tech entrepreneur has employed in their decade together.

There was also the time he commissioned a series of billboards to be set up in Palm Springs, welcoming his wife back to competition following an incredibly arduous maternity leave in 2018. And his decision to sweep her off to Venice because she mentioned that some pasta might be nice.

And, of course, there was his display at the 2019 U.S. Open in which he trolled his wife’s opponent, Maria Sharapova, exposing his D.A.R.E. t-shirt, a nod to Sharapova’s two-year doping ban, only when it was clear that Williams had cruised to a victory.

Get yourself a man who can be petty on your behalf and deftly shut down trolls. (As in, no, her Crip Walk during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance was about so much more than her romance with Drake, sorry, Stephen A. Smith.)

Serena Williams, alexis ohanian,

Ohanian, of course, is taken, with he and Williams, 44, tying the knot in New Orleans on Nov. 16, 2017.

And the University of Virginia grad has spent the eight years since reminding everyone that he’s scored the greatest tennis player in the world and the GMOAT (that’d be the Greatest Momma of All Time) to their 8-year-old daughter, future tennis ace Alexis Olympia Ohanian (a.k.a. the star of the 2024 ESPYs) and 2-year-old Adira River Ohanian.

While she boasts a record-setting 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era, Ohanian entered their union with what he called “the cheat code for partnership,” cribbed from his parents’ own experiences.

And the multi-millionaire entrepreneur’s secrets had little to do with extravagant trips and public displays of infatuation.

“You have to show up,” he wrote in a Glamour essay, published, appropriately, on Valentine’s Day in 2019. “You have to be supportive. These are the things that matter.”

Having watched his parents—who fell in love over a two-week span in Ireland—commit as “partners in the truest sense,” the New York City native was ready when he crossed paths with Williams at the Cavalieri hotel in Rome.

Though it may have helped if he’d seen even one moment of tennis in his lifetime.

Williams was there on business, prepping to play in the Italian Open. And while Ohanian was allegedly in town to speak at the Festival of Media Global conference, he had spent the night before their chance meeting in May 2015 drinking with Kristen Wiig. So he was just a touch out of sorts when he claimed the table next to Williams, her agent and her pal, one they were hoping to use for other members of her team.

Williams and her cohorts were annoyed; Ohanian was oblivious, having put on his headphones, ready to get to work.

“This big guy comes and he just plops down at the table next to us, and I’m like, ‘Huh! All these tables and he’s sitting here?'” Williams recalled to Vanity Fair in August 2017. Her business partner came up with a gambit, trying to shoo him away with the suggestion that a rat was present, but the tennis champ was more straightforward.

Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams

“We were trying to get him to move and get out of there,” she said. “He kind of refuses and he looks at us. And he’s like, ‘Is there really a rat here?'” So she switched tactics: “‘No, we just don’t want you sitting there. We’re going to use that table.'”

Reader, a meet-cute this was not.

But something about Ohanian won Williams over, perhaps his proclamation that in his native Brooklyn, he saw rats all the time. Williams then invited him to join them, which is when Ohanian got his first inkling that she was actually that Serena Williams, unmistakable tennis legend.

But, as he admitted to Vanity Fair, he had “never watched a match on television or in real life. It was literally the sport—even if ESPN was announcing tennis updates, I would just zone out. . . . I really had no respect for tennis.”

Which, was okay, because when Ohanian said he was at the tech conference to speak, an in-demand personality thanks to the creation of Reddit, Williams claimed to totally be familiar with the networking site, having perused it just that morning.

Serena Williams, Alexis Ohanian

Though they didn’t seem to be setting the stage for love, someone on Williams’ team invited Ohanian to watch her match.

She won, but not up to her standards. So, as she prepped to take the court at the French Open, something made her ask Ohanian along for a re-do.

“Even if she blows me off and we don’t even hang out, I’m still going to have an amazing time in Paris, and I’ll have an even better story for all my childhood friends,” he explained to Vanity Fair of accepting her invite, “when I was like, ‘Yeah, I went to Paris for a weekend. I was supposed to meet up with Serena Williams, she blew me off, but I’ve got other friends there, and we had a great time.'”

Which, he did. Because Williams certainly did not blow him off, the pair enjoying their first date post-match, spending six hours wandering the streets of Paris, buying candies from La Ménagerie in the Jardin des Plantes and walking past some of the most famous tourist sites in the world. Casual.

While few would think to pair a world-class athlete and a tech giant, the two simply work, Williams’ more passionate nature providing the perfect complement to Ohanian’s steady calm.

Both equally committed to being the best at what they do, they’ve schooled themselves on each other’s interests. Williams now sits on the board of Silicon Valley-based SurveyMonkey while Ohanian has transformed himself into tennis’ most ardent fan.

“He’s extremely smart but not a know-it-all. He’s curious about what he doesn’t know,” Williams told Vogue in 2017. “Being a Jehovah’s Witness is important to me, but I’ve never really practiced it and have been wanting to get into it. Alexis didn’t grow up going to any church, but he’s really receptive and even takes the lead. He puts my needs first.”

His thoughtfulness was very much on display with his December 2016 proposal at the same spot in Rome where they first met, a plastic rat on the table. But he raised the bar even further after Olympia’s arrival the following September.

Serena Williams, Alexis Ohanian

“My understanding of showing up and being present for my wife was taken to a whole new level when Olympia was born,” he wrote in his Glamour essay. “And it was perhaps even more meaningful to be there for my wife and to adjust to this new life we created together—especially after all the complications she had during and after the birth.”

Because while Williams at least outwardly appears to be superwoman, even winning the Australian Open shortly after learning she was expecting, her labor was a terrifying endeavor in which she developed a series of blood clots, including one that traveled to her lung, creating a potentially fatal condition called a pulmonary embolism.

Ohanian enjoyed all 16 weeks of his parental leave, touting the benefits to all who would listen. And though he eventually stepped down from the board at Reddit, publicly urging them to fill his seat with a Black candidate, he then cofounded San Francisco-based venture firm Initialized Capital and served as one of the investors who worked to bring a National Women’s Soccer League team to L.A.

Serena Williams, Alexis Ohanian and Daughter Olympia

And in 2020, he founded another venture capital firm Seven Seven Six—all while raising their spirited daughter and now her little sister.

Through it all, he understood that his career was the more flexible one, even after Williams announced she was “evolving away from tennis”.

“Research shows that men are happy to have successful wives—until it interferes with their own work,” he wrote in Glamour. “A full 50 percent of men expect their career to take precedence over their wife’s. I know this is real, because I’ve seen the tweets and comments.”

But Ohanian’s brand of assurance comes from being able to handle his career, bring up his daughters and get his butt in the stands to cheer on his endlessly talented better half.

“I try to be the most supportive partner I can be and to have conversations with her about her career goals and what she can do to reach them,” he told Glamour. “Most of my talks with Serena about her career have come from a place of ‘What do you want to be doing?’ or ‘Where do you want to be?’ and that’s not only in sport but in life.”

Being there for her and their daughters no matter what might mean setting up shop in Melbourne or Paris or London or. And his girls are regulars in his office, Ohanian’s partners, as he put it, “used to seeing Olympia jump on camera.”

They just shouldn’t expect him to pick up a call on Sunday.

Those days are reserved for family time and his dad’s pancake recipe, edited to allow for Williams’ wheat allergy and Olympia’s love of raspberries.

“There are no phones, just conversation. And we’ll spend the day together lounging around the house, or playing hide-and-seek, or going for a swim in the pool,” he told Glamour of life at home. “Just being a family on those days means so much to both of us—more than a billboard, a video montage, or a whirlwind trip to Italy.”

Though those highlights are pretty sweet as well. See how the pair continue to ace married life.

Serena Williams blames her father Richard for forcing her to pursue tennis instead of the sport of her dreams

Serena Williams revealed that her dream of becoming a gymnast was derailed by her father, Richard, as the 23-time Major champion explained that while she admired gymnastics, her parent insisted she pursue tennis, shaping her career path.

At ten years old, Serena considered gymnastics as a backup plan if tennis failed but her dad refused to allow the option, believing tennis would offer her the greatest opportunities to succeed in life.

Although he was later proved right, this moment left her feeling devastated and forced her to focus solely on the sport he envisioned, surrendering one of her ambitions and passions for success.

“I desperately wanted to be a gymnast,” Williams said, speaking to Venus. “One day my dad was like, ‘What would you do if it doesn’t work out in tennis?’

“I would say, ‘I want to be a gymnast’. One day my dad took me aside and he’s like, ‘You can’t say that anymore’.

“I was also like 10 years old. When I tell you I was devastated, my heart sank, and I felt like, ‘You crushed my dreams of being a gymnast!'”

Her older sister, Venus, who has won seven singles slams, reflected on their father’s reasoning, noting that gymnastics requires early specialization and Serena had already grown taller than most elite gymnasts.

So her father’s strict guidance ultimately ensured her future success in tennis instead of a sport with limited prospects.

“She was already too tall, and you have to start really young,” Venus added. “The ship had sailed, in the right direction though. Right straight to Flushing around the corner.”

Serena embraced tennis fully, winning her first Major singles title at the US Open in 1999 at age 17 and over her career, she collected 23 Major singles championships, set numerous records, and retired in 2022 with her final appearance at the US Open, solidifying her legacy.

Beyond her tennis career, Serena remains active in promoting women’s sports and attended the second edition of Athlos, a track-and-field event created by her husband Alexis Ohanian, which gathers top female athletes and celebrates achievements beyond tennis.

Williams played a central role at Athlos 2025, crowning winners with Tiffany crowns and supporting the event’s mission to raise visibility for women in sports.

Athlos surpassed its debut edition in every metric, showcasing her ongoing influence in athletics.

Aryna Sabalenka eclipses Serena

While Williams is a celebrated former tennis champion, the current World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has now surpassed her single-season earnings record as the Belarussian earned $15,008,519 in 2025, overtaking Serena’s $12,385,572 in 2013.

Her 2025 season includes victories at the US Open, Madrid Open, Miami Open, and Brisbane International meaning she has 21 WTA singles titles, including four majors, nine WTA 1000 wins, and six doubles titles.

After struggling with ranking consistency in 2022, Sabalenka achieved World No. 1 status in 2023 displaying an aggressive and consistent style of play.

She defended her Australian Open title, won the US Open, and finished as year-end No. 1 for the second consecutive year.

While Serena’s career remains historic, Sabalenka’s recent accomplishments show the evolving standards of women’s tennis.

Her achievements reflect both her talent and the continuing competitive landscape that current and former champions navigate.

The Way Serena's Hands Gave Out': Ciara Tries to Save Serena Williams from Hitting the Wall, But Fans Can't Believe What Happens Next

The R&B superstar recently proved why she remains undefeated in the world of dance and choreography, this time showing off her skills to none other than Venus and Serena Williams.

During an episode of the Williams sisters’ new show, The Stockton Street Podcast, Ciara led an impromptu dance-off that quickly turned from lesson to laughter. On Nov. 9, Ciara shared the hilarious moment on Instagram, where she tried to teach Venus and Serena a fun move that required some sturdy knee strength and a strong back. Serena, 44, gave it her all, but the floor had other plans.

In the clip, Ciara is seen teaching the tennis champs a dance to her hit song “Low.” She showed the sisters how to lean back while bending their knees for support. At first, Serena totally nailed it, while Venus, 45, sensibly opted to just shimmy along and enjoy the moment. But when they went in for round two, things got shaky and hilarious.

Fans flooded the comments section with love and laughter.

One user joked, “The legs said this ain’t tennis. The girls look good, though.”

Another wrote, “Venus knew and accepted her boundaries. Serena, on the other hand, wanted to test her faith, but mercy said NO!”

Rick Macci is offering a glimpse into how it looked to coach a young Serena Williams as the American tennis icon’s childhood coach claims she “refused to lose” even when she was a little girl.

After Richard Williams hit up Macci and told him about having two extremely talented daughters, the tennis coach agreed to bring them to his academy in Florida. The rest is history as Macci coached the Williams sisters for around four years during their childhood – between 1991 and 1995 – and is widely credited for the early development of the iconic American duo.

When the Williams sisters turned pro, one of the things that stood out about them wasn’t only their talent, but also their competitiveness. Serena was just 17 when she won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open and finished her career with 23 Majors. On the other side, Venus is still active despite being 45 years old and she has seven Slams in her collection.

Macci on Serena Williams’ best quality: Even as a kid, she refused to lose

When Williams decided to walk away from pro tennis after the 2022 US Open – just before her 42nd birthday – she didn’t hide that it wasn’t an easy decision. In early 2023, the former world No. 1 even admitted that she felt tempted to return because she felt that she could still play at the highest level and do great things. However, in the end, she refused to make that move and stayed retired.

Aryna Sabalenka Shatters Serena Williams’ Prize Money Record With Staggering $15 Million 2025 Haul

Aryna Sabalenka gives verdict on beating Serena Williams' records

Aryna Sabalenka has rewritten history. Even after finishing runner-up to Elena Rybakina at the 2025 WTA Finals, the Belarusian ended her season by surpassing Serena Williams’ long-standing record for the highest single-season prize money in women’s tennis. Sabalenka’s earnings reached a remarkable $15 million, eclipsing the $12.38 million Williams made during her dominant 2013 season. The record-breaking year not only reaffirmed Sabalenka’s dominance but also propelled her to second place on the all-time WTA prize money list with $45.17 million.

Sabalenka’s Climb Up the All-Time Prize Money List

Sabalenka’s 2025 campaign was one of the most consistent in recent memory. Her final loss in the WTA Finals did little to overshadow a year in which she won multiple titles, including a major, and stayed perched at world No. 1. The $2.69 million she earned for finishing second in Riyadh pushed her season total past the $15 million mark, a figure never before reached by a woman on the tour.

Her latest feat saw her leapfrog both Venus Williams and Iga Swiatek on the all-time earnings list, climbing from fourth to second within a month. She now trails only Serena Williams, whose unmatched $94.81 million remains the benchmark in women’s tennis. Sabalenka’s run this year further widened the gap between her and the chasing pack, with Iga Swiatek the closest active competitor at $43.64 million after earning $10.11 million in 2025.

The top five all-time WTA prize money leaders now feature Serena Williams ($94.81 million), Sabalenka ($45.17 million), Swiatek ($43.64 million), Venus Williams ($42.86 million), and Simona Halep ($40.23 million). Below is the table for all-time prize money leaders so far:

In 2016, Brady was trying to establish herself at Roland-Garros while Williams was defending her Grand Slam championship.

Brady won her first two matches but failed to qualify after being defeated by Daniela Hantuchova. Williams, meanwhile, reached the final in Paris before falling to Garbine Muguruza.

During an appearance on ‘The Players’ Box’ podcast with Jessica Pegula, Desirae Krawczyk and Madison Keys, the former world No. 13 was prompted to reveal her most awkward locker room experience. Brady, who is currently inactive but hasn’t formally announced her retirement, recalled the memorable meeting with the tennis icon.

She said: “I would say at the French Open, I was in the locker room, and you guys know how the space is very small. I was in one of the corners. I was actually next to Serena, and I was cleaning out my locker.

“I had four boxes of laundry, literally two bras and like one pair of shorts in one box, and then it’s like four shirts. I’m like, ‘Just put it all in one box.’ And they give you so many boxes.

“And I’m in the middle of doing that. And Serena comes in, and I just froze up, and I was like, ‘I’m in her way. I have to move.’

“I just literally go stand on the bench, walk over like jump over the bags, and just leave. I never even finished cleaning out my locker. I just had this urge to leave her in her space. Like, I was like so intimidated.”

Brady appeared in the French Open main draw on five occasions between 2017 and 2021, though she never progressed beyond the third round.

Keys, who claimed her maiden Grand Slam championship at the 2025 Australian Open, was prompted to share her most embarrassing experience.

The 30-year-old recalled: “It was a night match. I was like the last person to leave and was packing up my stuff, and I saw like a cockroach go running, and I jumped up on top of one of the benches and started just screaming bloody murder.

“It truly sounded like I was being attacked. And the poor security man outside came running in because I was the only person left, and he’s like, ‘Are you okay?’

“And I was like, ‘Yeah, it was a bug. Sorry.’ And he was like, ‘Oh, okay. That’s it.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, sorry.'”.

When you’re a mom, an entrepreneur, and one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen, mastering multitasking becomes a survival skill.

Serena Williams knows this better than anyone. Yet this time, some fans think she might’ve gone a little too far with her latest beauty habit.

Traffic jams meet skincare glow-ups

For Serena, opinions have never been an obstacle. Throughout her career, she’s been one of the most fearless and controversial figures in sports – unapologetically breaking molds on and off the court. Now, she’s doing it again, but this time with her beauty routine. Her cosmetic methods? Let’s just say they don’t involve a quiet spa day. Instead, she’s bringing the spa to her car.

They say beauty has a price – and Serena is definitely paying it. The tennis legend isn’t just keeping her skin flawless; she’s redefining time management while doing it. Picture this: Serena driving around, casually wearing a high-tech LED face mask. If traffic gets stressful, why not turn it into a self-care session? Collagen boost, wrinkle defense, and a radiant glow – all on the go. Sounds crazy? Please, if this surprises you… shame on you.

It’s definitely Serena’s way

Sure, some people think it’s a crazy move. But others see genius – especially in a world where traffic might be the most stressful place to exist. Serena knows it’s not the most “normal” practice, yet if there’s ever been a perfect example of multitasking done right, it’s this. The best part? The mask doesn’t block her vision. Otherwise, this story might’ve taken a very different turn.

At this point, it’s safe to say Serena couldn’t care less about being called eccentric. She’s long past needing approval. Whether she’s on the court, in business, or stuck in traffic wearing a skincare gadget, Williams continues to remind everyone that confidence – just like beauty – comes from doing things your own way.
