3 PGA Tour rule changes influenced by LIV but Tiger Woods demand is step too far

From billion-dollar investments to overhauled pace-of-play policies, the PGA Tour continues to modernize in 2025 under Jay Monahan’s vision, following decades of following rich traditions and pressure to change due to the disruption caused by the Saudi-backed tour LIV Golf.

When golf fans picture the PGA Tour, they think of prestige and stars like Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus in collared shirts, creased slacks, and hats. But 2025 has blown the doors off tradition with things like Signature Events, new equity models, and strict pace-of-play rules, all designed in response to LIV’s modernized changes.

Yet a straightforward request from Tiger Woods has remained ignored for decades, as PGA players still can’t wear shorts. The man referred to as the GOAT by many, although he has his own choice for the greatest player ever, has won 82 PGA Tour events and 15 major tournaments, and he has done all this in long pants while wishing his “chicken legs” could breathe.

In a previous interview in 2018, Woods was asked if he would rather play in shorts. He replied: “I would love it. We play in some of the hottest climates on the planet.

“A lot of the tournaments are based right around the equator, so we play in some of the hottest places on the planet. It would be nice to wear shorts. Even with my little chicken legs, I still would like to wear shorts.”

As the game continues to evolve, the world’s best players are scattered across multiple tours, and golf is seeing more diversity than ever; the tour continues to see its advancement.

PGA Tour Pace of Play rules

The PGA Tour’s newest pace-of-play policy was updated in March at the request of several top stars. It limits players to 40 seconds per shot. For players who aren’t granted the additional 10 seconds for special occasions, there is now a one-stroke penalty for the first offense, two for the next, and so on.

LIV has this rule on the tour and saw its first penalty occur during the LIV Golf Andalucia at Valderrama when Richard Bland took 84 seconds to play a shot on hole 15. The veteran shot a bogey on the hole, which was upgraded to a double bogey.

PGA Tour introduced Signature Events

In 2024, the PGA launched its “Signature Events” initiative, rebranding the “Designated Events” format from 2023.

The 2025 calendar now features eight high-stakes tournaments, including The Sentry, Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Truist Championship, and The Memorial Tournament.

World No. 1 player Scottie Scheffler took home $4 million for his Memorial Tournament win at Muirfield Village Golf Club last May.

These events feature higher prize money ($20 million) than the regular tournament competitions outside of majors and see a smaller field of players compete for a larger prize.

Each LIV tournament already has a purse of $20 million, and winners take home $4 million of the pot.

PGA Tour Player Equity

One of the most groundbreaking moves saw the PGA Tour extend ownership equity to nearly 200 members for the first time. On Jan. 31, 2024, a $3 billion partnership with Strategic Sports Group officially gave players a piece of the pie.

Woods and Tour Player Directors Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, and Jordan Spieth helped finalize the deal, ensuring pros had a stake in the product they built.

What Tiger Woods did on the PGA Tour in 2019 that stunned Tommy Fleetwood

Tiger Woods once did something so impressive on the PGA Tour that Tommy Fleetwood was left stunned.

Woods is widely regarded as the best player of all time, and he has the joint most wins in the history of the PGA Tour, with 82 to his name.

The 49-year-old won 15 major championships throughout his career as well, and one round he played six years ago left Fleetwood in awe of his talent.

Even Scottie Scheffler has admitted that comparisons between himself and Woods are ‘silly’, such was the 15-time major champion’s dominance during his peak.

Woods now puts most of his focus into golf course design, but he will obviously be remembered most for his prowess during tournament weeks.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner had a knack of surprising his fellow PGA Tour players at times with his peerless performances.

What Tiger Woods did on the PGA Tour in 2019 stunned Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood played alongside Woods in the third round of the ZOZO Championship in 2019.

The 49-year-old went on to win the event by three strokes, but it was his third round 66 that really blew Fleetwood away.

The Englishman was speaking on the Rick Shiels Golf Show back in 2021 about Tiger’s prowess on the golf course.

And he raved about what he witnessed Woods do at the ZOZO in 2019.

Fleetwood said: It was probably the best round of golf I’ve ever watched.

He hit shot after shot that was perfect and I was having one of those days where I was playing distinctly average, I’m grafting away to be around par or 1-over.”

At the end of the day, he taps in for his 66, nine birdies in his last 15 holes and he cruised to it. I shook his hand and I said, ‘that was really good today Tiger’.

Then he looked at me, he winked and he went ‘How ’bout that huh?’ He knows he’s played well there, so that must be very, very good.

He is so self-focused. It’s not that you don’t feel part of his round of golf, if he wants to talk he’ll talk, but he’s got that amazing focus that he’s always had and it almost makes it easier for you.

Tiger Woods’ incredible PGA Tour record

Woods’ record on the PGA Tour is truly incredible.

He finished inside the top-10 in more than 50% of the tournaments he played, and he won more than 20% of the events he played.

It’s such a shame that Woods has suffered so badly with injuries over the past 15 years or so.

He would have undoubtedly won many more tournaments and, indeed, major championships had he remained healthy.

Still though, Woods will go down as one of the two best players to have ever graced the game, alongside Jack Nicklaus.

And the truth is that many people would put him right at the top of the list.

15-time major champion Tiger Woods, still active if not for an injury, captivated the world’s attention during his celebrated come-up in the golf world in the late 1990s.

And According to new book, ‘Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York’ by Andrew Lownie, he had a fan in the royal family.

The famous golfer enjoyed a publicized friendship with Sarah Ferguson, the 65-year-old Duchess of York who married Prince Andrew in 1986 before the pair separated in 1992.

According to the book, before Woods began a troubled relationship with his future wife Elin Nordegren, he was one of a slew of American male celebrities — including John F. Kennedy Jr, George Clooney, and Kevin Costner — who Ferguson allegedly pursued.

It is claimed she told her friend and longtime media personality Piers Morgan of her interest in Woods, calling him “gorgeous,” before supposedly flying 1,500 miles to try to woo him following her separation from Prince Andrew.

On a similar trip, Ferguson allegedly looked for JFK Jr. ““On a trip to New York, Fergie asked her staff to find out if John F Kennedy Jnr…was in town and, discovering where he was, she invited him for drinks or dinner at her hotel, which he accepted.” Lownie’s book reads.

Ferguson never met Kennedy, but did meet Woods. The pair ended up as friends, and shortly after, she was pictured with the celebrated golfer as he won the Byron Nelson Tournament in 1997.

She also supported Woods as he battled back from a littany of injuries and off the course issues to surprisingly capture the 2019 Masters title.

“Never have I been more proud,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram in support of her friend. “Good days and bad days, Tigers’ heart is loyal, steadfast, and he is an amazing friend.”

Woods was married to Nordegren — who he met when she nannied for fellow golfer Jesper Parnevik — from 2004 to 2010. The pair has two children together: Samantha (18) and Charlie (16).

Their divorce was the subject of ample media coverage as Woods admitted to infidelity. Nordegren eventually started dating former NFL tight end Jordan Cameron, with whom she has three further children.

Woods, 49, is currently dating Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr. (the son of President Donald Trump). The couple announced the relationship on Instagram and called for “privacy” in a post receiving over 500,000 likes.

The Telegraph says a representative for the Duchess of York declined to comment.

In case you were wondering the sort of impact Ian Baker-Finch had on the golfers he covered for 30 years, his departure prompted Tiger Woods to make a rare statement.

Baker-Finch made the somewhat surprising announcement recently that he was retiring from his on-course broadcasting work. The former Open Championship winner carved out a very successful broadcasting career with the last 19 years coming as a staple of CBS Sports’ coverage of the PGA Tour.

Ultimately, though, he decided to walk away to spend more time with his family. While he noted in an appearance recently on Golf Channel that he and the network couldn’t come to terms on a new contract, he also said he knew it was time to do other things.

Ian Baker-Finch Opens Up About Retirement Decision

“I always knew that I’d know when I felt like it was the right time,” he said on “Golf Central” ahead of the tournament. “I’ve been mulling over the decision for quite a while now this year. My contract was up, I know I’d love to stay in so many ways … this year was my 41st time at those events 9(Masters, RBC Heritage, etc.) as a player and announcer and I said ‘You know, that’s too long.’ There’s other things to be done. I’ve lost a few friends, unfortunately, rest their souls, and I’m 65 at the end of the year and figured it was a good time to step away and go do something else.”

IBF’s final appearance came at the Wyndham Championship where he was showered with the praise and admiration he’s earned after a wonderful run in golf media. He has been synonymous with some of the game’s biggest tournaments and moments, and his passion for the sport mixed with high-level knowledge made him a comforting, entertaining piece of the golf-watching experience for three decades.

Tiger Woods Praises Ian Baker-Finch for 30 Years of Memories

Woods acknowledged as much with a farewell message as Baker-Finch’s career came to a close.

“Congrats Finchy for 30 incredible years behind the microphone,” Woods said in a tweet during the final round. “You brought insight into things that the viewing audience could understand and relate to. From all of us – thanks for the memories.”

While recovering from yet another injury, Woods has largely stayed quiet. The 15-time major champion has tweeted just three times for something other than a partnership or sponsorship since April. The first was to congratulate Rory McIlroy on the career grand slam, the second was to welcome Brian Rolapp as the Tour’s new CEO and the third was to give IBF his flowers.

Woods’ message was just part of the well-deserved sendoff. CBS celebrated Baker-Finch during Cameron Young’s runaway win Sunday, giving his coworkers time to wish him the best. Frank Nobilo, Trevor Immelman and Jim Nantz all spoke emotionally about their respect for their teammate.

“Whatever you think of Ian Baker Finch being in your home the last 30 years,” Nantz said to close the segment, “and I know it’s a great feeling having him as a friend from far away whatever you thought of him from far away, it’s 10 times better.”

The much-hyped peace talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf once carried hopes of reuniting the fractured world of pro golf.

Tiger Woods promised fans earlier this year that “things are going to heal quickly.” However, the world of golf is taken by storm as none of those promises feels true anymore. Behind closed doors, the second White House meeting ended in silence. With both sides doubling down and no signs of compromise, fans are left speculating what really happened.

CBS insiders Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner have provided a rare peek into what derailed the PGA Tour–LIV Golf negotiations. Speaking on Golf Channel, Hoggard remarked on the last meeting, “That meeting we now know did not go well. Clearly, there were some things that came up in that meeting that both sides seem entrenched on and they’re not going to negotiate.”

Hoggard didn’t mince words about the current standoff: “Both sides feel like they have the upper hand… that they have all the leverage they need and that they don’t need to negotiate.” But in his view, that’s a delusion. “I don’t believe that’s true. I think both sides suffer from the divide in golf.” He also referenced fan frustration: “The fans themselves told the PGA Tour… they want to see the best players playing together more often. Right now, it’s just the four majors.”

Lavner, meanwhile, took a swipe at Woods’ earlier optimism. “Yeah, I’m laughing at it as well,” he said, recalling Woods’ upbeat visit to the CBS booth during the Genesis Invitational. “He spoke so optimistically, saying all the best players are going to be back… I think that clip is going to live in infamy.” Lavner’s remark underscores just how derailed the two worlds of golf are from each other.

PGA Tour and LIV divide not likely to close any time soon despite Wood’s promises

Adam Scott, a key figure on the PGA Tour’s policy board, has confirmed what many had suspected. Negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have effectively stalled since their last murky White House meeting in February. Speaking ahead of the Wyndham Championship, Scott said bluntly, “There’s not much happening… Those conversations haven’t advanced far from there.” Despite being in the room with Jay Monahan, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and Donald Trump, Scott dismissed the need for further political theatrics, calling the experience unique but ultimately unproductive.

Golf phenoms like Tiger Woods had painted a rosy picture of the PGA’s hopeful narrative. However, Woods’ statements couldn’t be further from reality. His public optimism stood in stark contrast to the stalled talks behind closed doors.

With both sides entrenched and new leadership in place, the question remains. Is reconciliation still possible, or are LIV and the Tour destined to remain rivals, shaping two separate futures for professional golf?

The PGA Tour is expected to return to one of President Trump’s golf courses in 2026.

Trump Doral in Florida hosted a prominent PGA Tour tournament for several years. However, for the past decade, the PGA Tour has stayed away, possibly for political reasons. That is expected to change beginning in 2026.

According to a report from the  Sports Business Journal report, which cited “five industry sources,” Trump Doral is expected to host a PGA Tour tournament beginning in 2026.

It’s expected to host a tournament in next year’s April 30-May 3 date window, which falls between the Zurich Classic and Truist Championship.

Tiger Woods is a major fan of President Trump’s courses.

Earlier this year, Tiger Woods and his son, Charlie Woods, played a round of golf with President Trump at his course in Florida. Perhaps we’ll see Tiger Woods competing at the PGA Tour event at President Trump’s course in 2026. Tiger Woods will need to be healthy, of course, but he has a good relationship with the President of the United States.

If Tiger Woods is physically able to play, it’s likely that he’ll be competing at President Trump’s tournament.

LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau, meanwhile, wants to see The Open Championship return to President Trump’s course in Scotland, Trump Turnberry.

“I look at it as a golf course,” DeChambeau said after his round on Friday. “It’s one of the best golf courses in the world, and I’d love for it to be a part of the rotation.

“Albeit I haven’t played it, I’ve heard so many great things about it, and any time you get to play a special historical golf course like that, I think it’s worthy of it, for sure.”

DeChambeau thinks President Trump would do a great job of hosting the event.

“He’d still probably respect the R&A and what they’re trying to accomplish,” DeChambeau said. “I can’t speak on his behalf, but what I can say is, knowing him, he’ll do his best of a job as he possibly can.”

Kai Trump has named Tiger Woods as one of the biggest influences on her golf journey following her recent debut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Junior. It comes after she revealed her shared love with grandfather Donald for another sport.

The 18-year-old became the first relative of a sitting U.S. President to participate in an AJGA event this week when she lined up alongside some of the nation’s most promising young golfers at Bay Hill, in what is one of the most competitive junior golf tournaments in the country.

This year alone, Trump – who is set to represent the University of Miami in 2026 – has already featured in the 41st Nicklaus Junior Championship and the Sage Valley Junior Invitational, while she secured her biggest golfing achievement yet with a T3 finish on the Srixon Medalist Tour last month.

Unfortunately for Donald Trump’s granddaughter, she couldn’t follow it up with another impressive result at the APIJr, finishing 26th, second to last, with a score of 35 over par, but it was what she said afterwards that really caught the eye.

Speaking to the American Jr Golf Association in her post-tournament interview, the teenager was quizzed about her roots in the game and the biggest influences on her journey so far, where she namedropped a familiar face.

“I would say a lot of the pros, obviously, like looking up to them and watching them,” Trump began. “Obviously, Tiger [Woods], Rory [McIlroy]. Like watching those guys, especially at such a young age, and now I get to know them.

“It has been really cool, and that obviously kind of influenced me. But also, I’d say like my mom, I wouldn’t be playing golf without her.”

For any young aspiring golfer, Woods is always likely to be someone they look up to, and that’s no different for Trump. However, given the 49-year-old is now dating her mom, Vanessa, it holds even more significance.

Especially considering the golf icon could now be in a position to help mentor his new love interest’s daughter, alongside his own son, Charlie, who also continues to make waves in the junior age groups.

Following the death of his mother, Kultida, earlier this year, Woods was spotted breaking his cover alongside Trump as the duo turned up to the Genesis Invitational together.

The pair were seen wearing clothing from Woods’ Sun Day Red brand, with Trump sporting the company’s Luxe Lounge mid-weight quarter-zip pullover, which she paired with a white polo and black trousers.

Around the same time, the young golfer, whose willingness to walk alongside Woods suggested she approves of his relationship with her mom, had signed an endorsement deal with TaylorMade, which co-created Sun Day Red with Woods.

With Woods and Vanessa’s relationship said to be going from strength to strength, it can only be a good thing for Trump’s future in golf, providing her with excellent opportunity to seek advice and learn from arguably the greatest to ever do it.

Charlie Woods’ hopes of making the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team took a big hit after he faltered in the final round of the Junior PGA Championship, finishing tied for ninth and missing out on automatic qualification.

The 16-year-old was hoping to win the first big title of his junior career this week, as many of the top young golfers competed at Purdue University. He needed to finish first or second in Indiana to earn a place in next month’s Junior Ryder Cup at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black, but his three-day charge ended in disappointment as his late-round struggles cost him a place on Team USA.

Woods entered the final round in a strong position after posting impressive back-to-back rounds of 5-under 66, surging into a tie for second place at 12-under overall. The 16-year-old started the final day in second, seven shots behind overnight leader Lunden Esterline, and was in a good position to secure one of the two automatic spots on Team USA for the Junior Ryder Cup. However, he found himself 10 shots behind after eighteen holes.

The son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods grabbed national attention after making nine birdies in the third round at the Kampen Course at Purdue University in Indiana. But Woods couldn’t hold his ground on the final day, as he opened with a bogey and struggled to regain momentum. A double bogey later in the round sealed his fate as he shot a 3-over-par 74 and fell down the leaderboard. His 72-hole total of 9-under left him tied for ninth, four strokes behind the two players who locked up the final Ryder Cup spots.

Giuseppe Puebla and Tyler Mawhinney both finished at 13-under to earn automatic qualification, and Lunden Esterline won the tournament with a dominant 19-under-par finish, having already qualified through the points list.

Woods Faces Fight To Make Ryder Cup Team

With only one captain’s pick remaining for the boys’ team, Charlie is in danger of missing out on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He currently ranks 20th in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) standings, and this may not be high enough to earn him a final selection. The AJGA rankings play a key role in determining the team, along with performances in top tournaments like the Junior PGA.

The 2025 Junior Ryder Cup will take place from September 23 to 25 in New York, with matches held at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black. The event, modeled after the main Ryder Cup, features the top boys and girls from the U.S. and Europe competing in a team format. Although Woods came close to earning automatic qualification, he now faces a fight to make the Ryder Cup team, as he is unlikely to be selected for the captain’s pick.

Tiger Woods has put a strict rule in place for his 16-year-old son Charlie before he can get a share of his astronomical fortune.

The 15-time major winner is widely considered to be one of the greatest golfers of all time, if not the GOAT.

He made the majority of his money through prize money and major sponsorship deals, including one of the most famous athlete partnerships with Nike, which lasted 27 years.

Tiger Woods has strict money rule for son Charlie, 16, to get share of his $1.3 BILLION fortune

In 2022, he became the second active athlete ever following LeBron James to become a billionaire.

Now, Forbes estimate he has a net worth of $1.3bn (£980m).

His daughter Sam and son Charlie are set to inherit a chunk of that wealth, but there are conditions in place for them to receive money in the coming years.

Charlie, who is a promising golfer himself, already has a net worth of $25m (£18m), according to Sportskeeda.

But that fortune is likely to grow as he gets older and receives access to more of Woods’ money.

The Mirror report that both Charlie and his sister both have trusts in their name worth $20m (£14.8m). Meanwhile, Charlie has also been given two luxury properties in Florida and California.

However, will not be able to access these assets until he turns 21.

As the son of the legendary Woods and an emerging golfer, Charlie will likely benefit from sponsorships in the future.

He is already eligible for a Name, Image and Likeness deal, which are given in college to allow student-athletes to profit through their personal brand.

However, Charlie has not yet signed any such deal.

In 2023, there were rumours that he had signed a deal with Greyson Clothiers, but nothing was ever confirmed by Woods or Greyson.

Can Charlie Woods follow in Tiger’s footsteps?

Charlie is still at the start of his golfing journey, but there’s interest in how much he can achieve.

He has impressed at the ongoing Junior PGA Championships against some of golf’s best young talents.

Charlie is seven-under after two rounds, sitting six shots behind the leader Lunden Esterline.

He caught the attention with some great shots, sinking nine birdies in the first days.

It is a welcome boost for the youngster following a difficult display at the recent US Junior Amateur Championships.

After a torrid opening day in which he finished 11 over par, he was unable to claw it back on the second – where he finished 3-over par.

This meant he missed the cut by 10 shots and was sent home.

It is still still early days in Charlie’s career, but comparisons and intrigue are inevitable – especially when his father Tiger won his first major at just 21.

LIV Golf heads back to where it all began this week, as its annual event in the United Kingdom takes place at JCB Golf and Country Club in Rochester, England.

The Saudi-backed league’s inaugural event took place in England back in 2022, as Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead welcomed some of golf’s biggest names. Since LIV launched three years ago, it’s persuaded the likes of Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, and Brooks Koepka to sign up.

Yet one player who refused to join LIV was Tiger Woods. The golf icon was approached by Greg Norman, who was LIV’s CEO back in 2022, about joining the breakaway series.

Tiger Woods Greg Norman

READ: Tiger Woods Surpassed by Ex-Rival for the First Time in 28 Years as Comeback Hopes Fade

Norman recognized Woods’ reputation as the most popular golfer on the planet. Woods, a 15-time major champion, has won a staggering 82 PGA Tour titles during his career, with only Sam Snead achieving as many victories on North America’s premier circuit.

Woods has also won 15 major titles, with only Jack Nicklaus clinching more (18). Yet it’s the swashbuckling and fearless way that Woods plays the game that makes him such a popular figure in golf; the veteran never knows when he’s beaten.

Woods inspired a generation with his greatness, becoming Rory McIlroy’s childhood hero, so it’s no surprise that Norman wanted him at LIV. Norman, a two-time major winner himself, revealed his offer to Woods when LIV launched three years ago.

“Mind-blowingly enormous,” Norman said about the size of his offer to Woods. “We’re talking about high nine digits.”

Yet Woods had no interest in joining LIV and following in Mickelson’s footsteps. For years, Woods and Mickelson were the two dominant forces in the game, boasting the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the Official World Golf Ranking, respectively.

“He has his opinion on where he sees the game of golf going,” said Woods when asked about joining Mickelson at LIV.

“I have my viewpoint, how I see the game of golf. I’ve supported the Tour, and my foundation has run events on the Tour for a number of years. I just think that what Jack (Nicklaus) and Arnold (Palmer) have done in starting the Tour, breaking away from the PGA of America, and creating our tour in 1968… I just think there’s a legacy to that.

“I’ve been playing out here for a couple of decades, and I think there’s a legacy to it. I still think that the Tour has so much to offer, so much opportunity.

“I understand different viewpoints, but I believe in legacies. I believe in major championships. I believe in big events, comparisons to historical figures of the past. There’s plenty of money out here. The Tour is growing.

“But it’s just like any other sport. It’s like tennis. You have to go out there and earn it. You’ve got to go out there and play for it. We have opportunity to go ahead and do it. It’s just not guaranteed up front.”

Woods has proven his loyalty to the PGA Tour since LIV’s launch by joining the PGA Tour’s Policy Board in 2023 and playing a direct role in talks over a merger between the tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the financial backers of LIV.

As it stands, a merger is yet to be finalized. But if it’s completed, it’s expected to end the civil war that’s raged in men’s professional golf since LIV’s launch in 2022.
