Terence Crawford teases big ‘surprise’ in update as he meets with Turki Alalshikh after Canelo Alvarez win

Terence Crawford and Turki Alalshikh have met for the first time since his victory over Canelo Alvarez.

And it has become abundantly clear that they have already had conversations over the future of Crawford’s boxing career.

Alalshikh financially backed Crawford’s mega-fight with Alvarez last month, which saw him become undisputed super-middleweight champion, snatching the belts from the Mexican.

Crawford has now achieved it all in the sport, winning world titles in five weight classes, and is now at a crossroads.

Immediately after the astonishing victory, Crawford suggested he has yet to consider his next move.

But he insisted he could retire from the sport, or even continue his career with a potential switch to 160lbs.

Now while stood alongside Saudi chief Alalshikh, an update was given on his future as he will now rest before making his next move.

Alalshikh said: “This is the gloves of the champ. He gave it to me, and it’s important. We do it.

“The champ has a lot of surprises for his city [Omaha, Nebraska], and the future.

“He wants to rest now for one or two months, and then we will tell you the surprise.”

Crawford then presented Alalshikh with the gloves from his fight, to which the Saudi chief was extremely appreciative.

What is next for Terence Crawford?

For now, Crawford’s future remains up in the air, but several fighters are forming an orderly queue to face the new pound-for-pound king.

Crawford would be heavily backed to go down and have huge succcess at 160lbs, given his seamless transition to 168lbs.

Unified WBO and IBF champion Janibek Alimkhanuly has already offered a shot to Crawford, should he chase history.

And the Kazakh fighter may have even unified the division by then, with talks over a clash with WBA champion Erislandy Lara reportedly in motion.

Crawford irrespective of his future has cemented his legacy as an all-time great.

And prior to his meeting with Alalshikh, ‘Bud’ refused to give anything away regarding his next move.

“To be honest, I don’t know what I’m gonna do,” Crawford said.

“Like I said, everything is up in the air right now. I’m just enjoying my family, enjoying being able to say, ‘Look what I accomplished.’

“I’m just chilling, right now, I haven’t even got the time to sit down with my team and talk with them.

“I talked with my family — I know what my family want. But you know, it’s a team effort.”

Canelo Alvarez needs another blockbuster that not only puts him back on the throne but also guarantees another $100 million payout. Speculations are rife. As far as the man about whom Alalshikh pondered, he seems to have already made up his mind.

No turning back: David Benavidez leaves 168 pounds behind

The recent interview with Ring Magazine saw Shady McCoy repeat Turki Alalshikh’s poser. “David, I gotta ask you, bro, before you leave because all the fans want to know this. Can you still make 168?” the former running back asked. Initially, Benavidez joked, “To be honest with you, man, let Terence Crawford live.”

But it didn’t take much time before he spilled the tea. 168 pounds barely piqued any interest. A matchup against Crawford or Canelo could reap a windfall. Still, he felt at home as a light heavyweight champion. “I’m chasing Beterbiev. I’m chasing Bivol, you know. I’m chasing these other bigger. I’m chasing Zurdo Ramirez at cruiserweight, you know what I mean? So, I’ve been at 168, but I have no interest in going down,” David Benavidez said.

Benavidez is now lined up for a high-stakes bout against Anthony Yarde. The duo will headline the ‘Ring IV‘ card on November 22 in Riyadh. But it goes without saying. In light of Canelo’s loss to Crawford, many fans contemplate a matchup with David Benavidez, who had been chasing it for years. Is there a way to claim it back?

From super middleweight’s undisputed title holder, Canelo Alvarez has transitioned to WBC’s number one-ranked contender.

Final push: Canelo’s race for the throne

So that puts him in a tricky situation. He could follow Terence Crawford to give him a rematch. But one should remember, it entirely depends on the Nebraskan champion. The contract for their September 13 fight didn’t carry the rematch clause. Hence, the prospects of a second fight appear daunting.

A longer and perhaps more obvious route could be to initiate a face-off against the second-tier names, such as interim champion Jose Resendiz or, more significantly, Christian M’billi. A win or two would make for a compelling argument to invite Crawford for a second round.

The three-division undisputed champion remains uncertain about the future. So it makes the likelihood of a rematch slim.

In the meantime, fans can only hope for David Benavidez to reflect on his stance. After November’s title defense, opting for the trilogy fight with Beterbiev, if Dmitry Bivol fails to comply with his title unification bid, Canelo still remains one good option for Benavidez. After all, his recent opponent, David Morrell Jr., has already hinted at a move down the division.

‘It is not true’ – Turki Alalshikh dismisses claims he will buy EFL club

Turki Alalshikh has taken to social media to deny claims that he is set to buy Bristol City.

Alalshikh, who is the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia, is responsible for bringing some of sport’s biggest events to his homeland.

In recent years, boxing, MMA, WWE, Formula 1 and LIV Golf have all become regular fixtures in the Saudi sporting calendar.

With the 2034 World Cup also set to take place in the land, it seems Alalshikh has further plans to invest in football.

Is Turki Alalshikh investing in football?

Earlier this summer, Alalshikh was rumoured to looking for a way into the English game.

This was then confirmed by talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan, who revealed the businessman was interested in buying either of Championship sides Southampton and Millwall.

The billionaire was also spotted commenting on a post from the Lions’ main social media channel.

Jordan confirmed he had even offered his advice to the Saudi boxing chief, having also suggested he consider investing in Sheffield Wednesday.

Speaking in May, Jordan said: “I’ve told him and tried to talk him out of Millwall because I don’t think it’s a proper football club, but that’s a different discussion.

“But it is Millwall, and he likes Southampton. I suggested Sheffield Wednesday to him. He doesn’t want Sheffield Wednesday.”

But with no further progress being made on this front, Alalshikh then found himself linked Bristol City earlier this month.

Journalist Alan Nixon reported via his Patreon that the boxing promoter was preparing a bid to purchase the Robins from the Lansdown family.

But Alalshikh has quickly shut these rumours down, as he took to social media to clear things up.

He wrote on X: “It is not true that I will buy Bristol City FC.”

Even after the 43-year-old’s comments, it arguably isn’t surprising that to hear that Bristol City won’t be changing owners any time soon.

In February, long-time chairman Steve Lansdown played down any potential takeover at Ashton Gate, claiming it was ‘not close’.

On paper, it isn’t hard to see why potential investors would be considering City.

The Reds made it to the Championship play-off semi-finals last term, but missed out on Wembley after a heavy defeat to Sheffield United.

They have made a strong start to this season, and currently sit third in the second tier with 11 points from their opening six games.

Gerhard Struber’s side have lost just once so far, with their first defeat coming against Oxford United at Ashton Gate last weekend.

With Alalshikh now distancing himself from rumours linking him with the club, City will be looking to put in a strong performance this weekend in their league match against Preston North End.

Terence Crawford didn’t rule out fighting David Benavidez but said he wasn’t interested because of the size difference

When he was asked about a potential rematch with Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford stated that his new direction hasn’t been decided yet following September 13.

This would obviously be the biggest fight out there for ‘Bud’, but there is another star that some, including Turki Alalshikh, want to see him in the ring with.

Alvarez has been accused of avoiding the 30-0 David Benavidez in the past.

The 28-year-old last competed at super middleweight in November of 2023, before moving up to light heavyweight for the next two bouts of his career.

Crawford, who beat the older brother of ‘The Mexican Monster’ (Jose Benavidez Jr.) in 2018, was asked about the prospect of facing him down the line during an appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast earlier this year.

“My thing is, Benavidez is a big dude,” Crawford replied. “Not to say I won’t fight him, I fought his brother. His brother was big when I fought him. The only reason why I entertain Canelo is because he’s not a big dude. He might be thick but he’s not a big dude.

“Benavidez is like six foot something, then he’s gonna come in 190, 200 maybe, you know what I mean? You never know, that’s a big dude… I might as well go to heavyweight if I fight Benavidez.”

During Thursday’s press conference, promoter Turki reminded the key players that he doesn’t want a “Tom and Jerry” style fight. He wants to see “blood” and “smashed faces.” That’s the kind of fight that four-belt undisputed 168-lb champion Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) prefers, and the one he’ll be trying for.

TURKI’S QUEST FOR BLOOD

With Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) moving up multiple weight divisions after an extended layoff of 13 months, it’s not expected that he’ll accommodate Turki’s wishes to turn the fight into one that involves broken bones, “smashed faces,” and “blood” for the masses that will be watching on Netflix.

Crawford just wants to win and doesn’t care how he does it. The Nebraska native Crawford could be retiring after this fight. So, there’s less incentive for him to go along with Turki’s wishes to turn this fight into a violent spectacle that could end badly for him. Terence, 37, knows that if he wins, he’s got an excellent chance of being offered a rematch with Canelo and a pay increase from what he’s receiving for Saturday’s fight.

Mount Rushmore in Jeopardy

Even if Canelo bitterly rejects the idea of a second fight if he’s given a controversial defeat, Crawford would likely be offered a big payday by Turki to fight someone else. He would probably draw the line if Turki wanted him to fight against David Benavidez, Dmitry Bivol, or Jaron Ennis. Those fighters could mess up Terence’s legacy by defeating him by knockout or a one-sided decision.

Crawford’s hopes of one day being on the All-time great list and the Mount Rushmore of boxing could be spoiled if he fought those talents. That’s just a small list. There are fighters at 168, 160, and 154 that could wreck Crawford’s hopeless dream of making it to the Mt. Rushmore status. For example, Canelo’s sparring partner, Yoenli Hernandez, could be kryptonite to Crawford in my view.

A NETFLIX SPECTACLE OR SNOREFEST?

“I want to see blood, smashed faces, and broken bones,” said Turki Alalshikh during the press conference on Thursday about his expectations for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford once-in-a-generation showdown.

You can’t blame Turki for wanting to see a violent fight between Canelo and Crawford, as this is going to be a clash that millions of people will watch on Netflix. He needs this to be an entertaining fight, and if it fails to deliver, he’s going to look bad for his decision to hand-pick Crawford. This is his creation. Turki is the one who wanted Crawford for Canelo, not the fans.

If Crawford doesn’t do his part to make it exciting, it’ll reflect badly on Turki, because he could have used his money to pick more proven fighters who have shown a history of being involved in entertaining fights. Having watched Crawford’s fights since the start of his career in 2007, he has never been a fighter considered a must-watch.

The Gold Standard of Entertainment

If the gold standard for entertainment is former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, Crawford would be the lead standard in my view. I would have never chosen him for Canelo if it were up to me. I’d have selected a more proven fighter who is known for going to war, like David Benavidez or Artur Beterbiev. Either of those fighters would have been excellent choices to fight Canelo on Saturday.

“As I said last week, I hate Tom and Jerry’s kind of boxing. I am sure they will deliver for me, smashing face and blood. This is boxing,” said Turki.

Itauma is already ranked number 1 by the WBO (World Boxing Organization) and a world title shot appears to be on the cards sooner rather than later. When Usyk flattened Daniel Dubois last month to become undisputed, Saudi power broker Turki Alalshikh was quick to suggest that a showdown with Itauma is THE FIGHT that boxing wants and needs.

Itauma himself has been quick to suggest that his skillset is on a par with Usyk or better, but admits he needs more rounds and experience to get that championship level of endurance and mindset.

Usyk on Moses Itauma

As for Usyk, he is clearly very very impressed by the young prodigy, who mixes devastating speed and power with a remarkable ring IQ for one so young.

He told talkSPORT: “Moses Itauma. I think he is a great fighter. Young, 20 years, yes? I think Itauma has a big future.”

It remains to be seen whether that future includes a blockbusting showdown vs Usyk, but before that Moses will take a big step up in class when he meets former world title challenger Dillian Whyte in a crossroads matchup in Riyadh next Saturday night (August 16).

Itauma will start a hot favourite against a man who just three years ago was challenging Tyson Fury for the WBC heavyweight title at Wembley Stadium. Now at the age of 37, and relatively inactive since that night, there are question marks about what Whyte has left.

We will find out the answer to that question in a few days, but many expect him to give Itauma his biggest test yet.

‘The Problem Child’ met with Saudi powerbroker Turki Alalshikh last week to discuss a possible fight with AJ.

Paul has set his sights on the former unified heavyweight champion after overcoming Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in his last outing.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer vowed to knock out Joshua during a lengthy rant on his podcast where he claimed the Watford powerhouse ‘doesn’t have a chin’.

Boxing mogul Alalshikh was then contacted to get involved with the fight.

And during a recent appearance on ‘Tha Boxing Voice’, he revealed that Paul had accepted his proposal for a 99-1 purse split in Joshua’s favour.

“I’m not against what Jake Paul’s doing in boxing, it’s good for boxing to have a young generation,” said Alalshikh.

“I’m against some kinds of fights he does. I’m now thinking him against Joshua. Joshua, if he destroys (Paul), it will be good for me.

“The headache of Jake Paul goes from my mind.

“If Jake Paul wins, I will know that Joshua is finished, and Jake Paul deserves his ranking and deserves to have a future in boxing.

“I don’t want 50-50. In this situation, I want 99-1.

Jake Paul has accepted. Now, next week I will talk with Joshua about it.”

If Paul signs for these terms, then Joshua will receive a 99 per cent lion’s share of the total prize pot.

Both men are commercial juggernauts in the boxing sphere, and the expectation is that they would demand a similar cut.

Paul pocketed $40million to fight Mike Tyson last November, but under Alalshikh’s terms, he wouldn’t come anywhere near that sum.

On the flip side, Joshua would bank one of the biggest purses in boxing history.

There will undoubtedly be serious money on the line for the fight, and with a 99 per cent share, Joshua could make eight figures.

Oleksandr Usyk Names The One Opponent He Hated And It’s NOT Tyson Fury

Oleksandr Usyk is a classy character in and out of the ring, so Huck must have said some truly terrible things to make Usyk hate him.

Nevertheless, Usyk is now set for another massive fight against Dubois. He stopped the Brit in the ninth round of their 2023 showdown. However, the fight was controversial as Usyk once touched the canvas from a shot by Dubois, which was deemed an illegal low blow. Dubois still believes it was a fair hit, whereas Usyk is looking to put the rivalry to bed once and for all.

The fight takes place at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom on July 19.

Fury firmly believes his two decision losses against Usyk weren’t fair and said, “I want a f***ing fair fight, I don’t want any favors, I want a fair fight, a fair result, which I believe and I know, I didn’t [lose].”
